What a wireless smart home is

Wireless home automation is the quickest way to have a smart home: the devices talk to each other by radio and there is no need to run new cables or chase walls. For a smart home without rewiring in Seville, in a finished flat, it is the natural choice. We fit smart switches, sockets, sensors and modules in the boxes and sockets you already have, connect them to a hub or your network and leave them working with your phone or your voice.

If you are building new or doing a full renovation and want a more robust system, a wired system may suit you better: we explain it in smart home installation, and the KNX option in KNX home automation.

Smart home without rewiring: what we can automate

  • Smart switches in place of your current ones, which still work by hand and also from your phone or by voice.
  • Hidden modules behind the existing switch, to keep the switch range you already have.
  • Smart plugs, to schedule the water heater (termo), a floor lamp or a fan and see what they use.
  • Sensors for doors and windows opening, motion, temperature and humidity, and water leaks in the kitchen and bathroom.
  • Roller shutters and awnings, with modules for existing motors or new radio motors. See motorised blinds and awnings.
  • Heating and cooling, with smart thermostats or air conditioning controllers.
  • LED strips and indirect lighting controlled from your phone, as described in LED strip lighting.

Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi and Matter: which to choose

  • Zigbee: low-power mesh network with a hub. Each connected device strengthens the signal for the others. Ideal for many sensors and bulbs.
  • Z-Wave: also mesh with a hub, with less interference with the home Wi-Fi.
  • Wi-Fi: no hub, connects directly to the router. Convenient with a few devices, but with many it can overload the network.
  • Matter: the standard backed by Apple, Google, Amazon and Samsung so that equipment from different brands understands each other. It is the safest bet if you want to expand or change assistant later.

In Seville flats with thick walls, such as those in Triana or the city centre, a mesh network with a hub usually gives better coverage than relying on Wi-Fi alone. We choose the protocol after seeing your home and what you already have.

Scenes and automations

The point of a smart home is not switching on a light from your phone, but having the home do things by itself or with a single command:

  • Leaving home scene: turns off all the lights, lowers the shutters and switches off the plugs you choose.
  • Cinema scene: dims the living room and turns on the indirect light.
  • At dusk: turns on the porch and hallway light.
  • Water leak alert: if the sensor by the dishwasher detects water, you get a notification on your phone.

We explain it in more detail in smart lighting.

How we work

  1. Visit and wish list: what you want to control, with which assistant and what devices you have.
  2. Check of boxes and neutral wire, because some smart switches need it.
  3. Proposal of devices and protocol, with the price per point.
  4. Installation and pairing of each device with the hub and the assistant.
  5. Programming of scenes and schedules, and a walk-through of the app for the whole household.

Regulations

Automation installations comply with ITC-BT-51 of the Spanish Low Voltage Electrical Regulations, and radio devices must comply with European Radio Equipment Directive 2014/53/EU. We only install CE-marked devices.

Frequently asked questions

Can a home be made smart without building work?

Yes. Wireless switches and modules go in the switch boxes you already have, smart plugs go in the socket (outlet) and sensors are stuck or screwed in place. There is no need to chase walls or run new cables, only to check that the boxes have room and, for some models, a neutral wire.

Which is better: Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi or Matter?

Zigbee and Z-Wave form a low-power mesh network with a hub and work very well with many devices and battery sensors. Wi-Fi needs no hub but loads the router if there are many devices. Matter is the standard that makes equipment from different brands compatible. We recommend one based on your home and your devices.

Does it work with Alexa, Google Home and Apple Home?

Yes, as long as we choose devices compatible with the assistant you use. With Matter, one device can work with several ecosystems at once, which leaves you free to change assistant in the future. Before buying, we review the devices you already have at home.

What happens if the internet goes down?

With a local hub, such as Zigbee or Z-Wave ones, the switches keep working and so do basic automations. Without internet you lose control from outside the home and by voice. That is why we prefer systems that do not rely only on the cloud.

How much does a wireless smart home cost?

Roughly 60 to 120 euros plus 21 % VAT per point installed, plus the price of the device. A flat with the main lights, a couple of sockets and a sensor or two costs much less than a wired system. A 60 m2 flat made smart starts at about 1,500 euros plus VAT.

Can I keep using the wall switches?

Yes, and we recommend it. Smart switches still work as normal switches, so anyone in the home, or a guest, can turn on the light without a phone. Smart home technology should add, not complicate, and the home must keep working even if the phone battery is flat.

I only spend part of the year in Seville. What is worth automating?

Water leak sensors in the kitchen and bathroom, smart plugs on the water heater (termo) and a few lights to simulate presence, all with alerts on your phone. With a local hub, the basics keep working even if the router restarts while you are away.
