Motorised blinds in Seville: comfort and a cooler home

In Spain, the persiana is an external roller shutter that drops down over the window, and in Seville it goes up and down several times a day for much of the year: down at midday to keep the sun out, up at dusk to let air in. In English they are often simply called blinds (shades in the US). Motorising them turns that routine into a button, a remote or a voice command, and lets you automate it so the home stays cool even when you are away. And no more broken straps.

How a roller shutter is motorised

1. We open the shutter box and remove the axle, the strap winder and the strap.
2. We install a tubular motor inside the axle, matched to the size and weight of the shutter.
3. We bring power to the box, from a nearby point or with a new line.
4. We fit the control: a wall switch in place of the strap winder, a remote control or a receiver for home automation.
5. We set the end stops so the shutter stops exactly at the top and bottom.

The slats, guide rails and box are kept. If the shutter is in poor condition, we tell you before motorising it.

Types of control

• Wall switch, the simplest, where the strap winder used to be.
• Remote control, individual or one for the whole home.
• Radio motors, which allow wireless wall switches with no wall chasing.
• Phone and voice control, with motors or modules compatible with Zigbee, Wi-Fi or Matter, which integrate with a wireless smart home.
• Automation by schedule or by sun, to lower the south and west-facing shutters during the hottest hours.

Motorised awning with sun and wind sensor

A motorised awning is almost a must on Seville terraces and penthouses. We install the motor, the power supply and the control, and add sensors:

• Wind sensor: retracts the awning when the wind blows hard, even when you are not at home. It protects the awning and the façade.
• Sun sensor: extends it when the sun is strong and retracts it in the evening.
• Control by schedule or from your phone, integrated with the rest of the home.

Scenes with shutters

Integrated in a smart home system, the shutters become part of scenes: press leaving home and they all come down and the lights go off; at sunrise the bedroom ones go up; in summer, at midday, the south-facing ones come down. That is how they work in a complete smart home installation, together with the lights and the smart thermostat. For a holiday home, the same automation keeps the rooms shaded through the summer while nobody is there.

Regulations

The electrical part of the motorisation complies with ITC-BT-51 of the Spanish Low Voltage Electrical Regulations on automation systems. Motorised roller shutters follow standard UNE-EN 13659 and awnings UNE-EN 13561.
