FAQ

How long does it take to get a boletín (electrical certificate) in Spain?

A boletín is quick if the installation complies: the electrician prepares it after one visit with measurements and registers it with the Junta de Andalucía industry department within a few days; as a reference, 5 to 15 days are typical for EV charging points. If the installation needs work first, the timing depends on that work.

How long a boletín takes, step by step

How long the boletín (the electrical installation certificate, officially the CIE) takes depends mainly on one thing: whether the installation complies with Spanish regulations from day one or something must be fixed before it can be signed. These are the stages:

  1. Visit and inspection. The electrician checks the fuse board, the earthing (grounding), the RCDs and the cable sizes, and takes measurements. In a normal home one visit is enough.
  2. Upgrades, if needed. If the earth or an RCD is missing, or the board is outdated, it is fixed first. That can take a morning or several days.
  3. Paperwork. The certificate (CIE) and the technical design report (MTD) are prepared.
  4. Registration with the Junta. It is filed online with the Junta de Andalucía regional office in Seville, Spain. Without problems, it is resolved within a few days; for EV charging points 5 to 15 days are typical.
  5. Handover. You receive the boletín for your supplier or the distributor.

What can delay it

  • Older installations with defects that must be put right before signing.
  • Missing details about the account holder or the supply.
  • Paperwork with the distributor, such as a power increase that requires checking the service connection, or a new connection, which have their own timescales.
  • Installations that need a full project instead of a technical report, such as some business premises or EV charging above 50 kW.

How to speed it up

  • Have an electricity bill, the account holder’s details and the exact supply address to hand.
  • If you know you will increase your power or install a charger, say so when you ask for the boletín so everything is done at once.
  • Ask for a prior inspection if the home is old: you will know from the start whether anything needs fixing.

Be wary of an instant boletín without a visit

A boletín is a signed declaration that your installation complies. Only a registered installer (instalador habilitado) can sign it. If someone offers it without seeing the installation, the document does not protect you and may cause problems with your insurer or an inspection.
