FAQ
How much does it cost to replace a fuse board (consumer unit) in Spain?
Replacing the fuse board (consumer unit, or cuadro eléctrico) in a Spanish home costs roughly 300 to 1,200 euros plus VAT: about 300 euros for a basic board, 300 to 800 euros with all its components and 450 to 1,200 euros in older homes that need more adaptation. The price depends on the number of circuits and protective devices.

| Board in an older home, more adaptation | 450 to 1,200 € |
| Repairing a fault without replacing the board | 80 to 150 € |

What a modern Spanish fuse board contains
- Main switch (IGA): protects the whole home against overloads and short circuits.
- 30 mA RCDs (diferenciales): protect people against leaks to earth. It is advisable to have more than one, so a single leak does not black out the whole house.
- MCBs (magnetotérmicos), one per circuit: lighting, sockets, cooker and oven, washing machine and water heater, bathroom, air conditioning and so on.
- Surge protector: shields your appliances against lightning and voltage spikes.
The rules for the board are ITC-BT-17 (control and protection), ITC-BT-23 (surges) and ITC-BT-25 (circuits in homes).
Why it costs more in older homes
An old board usually has few circuits, sometimes fuses or a single RCD. Replacing it means separating lines that used to run together, checking the earthing (grounding) and confirming the individual riser cable can carry the power. The more adaptation, the higher the price.
New board or full rewire
A modern board does not fix cables in poor condition. If the installation has fabric-covered cables, no earthing or has not been touched for 25 or 30 years, consider a full rewire instead.
Signs it is time to replace it
- Buzzing or heat in the board.
- Terminals or breakers with burn marks.
- Frequent tripping with no clear cause.
- One RCD for the whole house, or none.
- No room for the circuit you need, for example for an EV charger or air conditioning.
