What the hourly rate covers and what it does not

It covers: the electrician’s work and the use of their tools and test equipment.

It does not usually cover:

  • Travel, 15 to 30 euros.
  • Materials: switches and sockets, cable, breakers, boxes.
  • The boletín (electrical certificate) and official fees, if the job needs them.
  • Surcharges for nights, weekends or public holidays.

Questions worth asking first

  • Do you charge for full hours or for fractions?
  • Is travel included or extra?
  • How do you charge for materials?
  • Does the price include VAT (IVA)?

When to pay by the hour and when to ask for a fixed price

Paying by the hour makes sense for fault finding, when nobody knows how long it will take to find the problem. For everything else a fixed price is better. Small jobs (hanging lights, changing switches, fitting brackets) are quoted at roughly 30 to 50 euros per job, and grouping several into one visit makes each one cheaper because you only pay travel once. You will find these jobs under small electrical jobs.

How to avoid surprises on the invoice

  1. Get the hourly rate and the travel charge in writing before the visit.
  2. If the electrician comes and does not repair, that travel charge can be billed as long as you were told in advance.
  3. Insist on an invoice with hours and materials itemised.
