FAQ

How do I get the electricity connected in a new home in Spain?

To connect the electricity in a new home in Spain you need the registered boletín (electrical certificate), the CUPS code of your supply point, your ID and a bank account. With those you sign up with the supplier you choose, which asks the distributor, e-distribución in Seville, to connect you. You pay connection fees and the power you contract.

Step by step

In Spain, connecting a new supply is called the alta de luz. This is the sequence:

  1. Get the registered boletín (CIE). In a new build, the developer files it for each home: ask for it at key handover. Without it the distributor will not connect you.
  2. Find the CUPS. It is the unique code of your supply point: 20 characters starting with ES. In a new home the developer gives it to you or it appears in the supply documents.
  3. Decide the power. The potencia contratada (contracted power, in kW) is how much you can use at once. With an induction hob and air conditioning, 4.6 to 5.75 kW is normal.
  4. Choose a supplier and sign the contract with your ID (for most foreign buyers, the NIE or passport) and a bank account.
  5. The supplier asks the distributor to connect the supply. The timing is set by the distributor and depends on the paperwork being complete.

Distributor and supplier: the key difference

  • Distributor (distribuidora): owns the network and the meter. In Seville it is e-distribución. It connects you and charges the connection fees (derechos de alta).
  • Supplier (comercializadora): the company you sign with and that bills you. You choose it.

If a connection is delayed, it helps to know which of the two you are dealing with before you complain.

What usually happens in a new build

The developer leaves the service connection, the meter room and each home’s boletín ready. Each buyer then signs their own supply contract. Since many neighbours ask for it at the same time after handover, start as soon as you have the keys and the documents.

If the home has no boletín or is old

If the property never had a boletín, or it is very old, a registered installer must check the installation, bring it up to standard and issue a new one before the connection.

Common mistakes

  • Contracting more power than the boletín allows: the distributor will refuse it.
  • Mixing up supplier and distributor when chasing a delay.
  • Waiting until moving day to start.

We handle this in Seville, Spain, on our new electricity connection page, and issue certificates on electrical certificate (boletín).
