Distributor and supplier (distribuidora y comercializadora)

The distributor owns the network and the meter, brings electricity to your home and repairs network faults; in Seville it is e-distribución. The supplier (retailer in the US) is the company you sign the contract with and that bills you for energy.

The difference

It is the difference between whoever owns the cables and whoever sells you what flows through them. The distributor (distribuidora) owns the network, the service connection and the meter, reads it and repairs faults in the street. You do not choose it: it depends on where you live. The supplier (comercializadora) is the company you sign the contract with, which sets the price and sends the bill. You can switch it whenever you like.

The distributor in Seville

In Seville and almost all of Andalusia the distributor is e-distribución, part of the Endesa group. Since 2019 it has been a separate company from Endesa the supplier, although many people confuse them. Even if your contract is with Iberdrola, Naturgy, Octopus or another company, the cable and smart meter still belong to e-distribución.

Who to call in each case

  • Power cut in the whole street or building: the distributor, which repairs network faults.
  • Questions about the bill, price or tariff: the supplier.
  • New connection, change of holder or power increase: you request it from the supplier, but the distributor carries it out and charges the regulated fees.
  • Something trips in your fuse box or a socket fails: that is your internal installation and an electrician fixes it.

If you are not sure whether the outage is yours or the company’s, check whether your neighbours have power and look at your fuse box. See our 24-hour emergency electrician in Seville, Spain.
