Regulations
Motorised gates are machines and must comply with the Machinery Directive, the product standard UNE-EN 13241 and UNE-EN 12453, which limits closing forces and requires safety devices. How much does it cost to motorise a sliding gate?
As an estimate, 500 to 1,500 euros plus 21 % VAT installed, with motor, photocells, warning lamp, receiver and two remotes. The price depends above all on the weight and length of the gate, how much it will be used and whether the power cable has to come a long way or building work is needed for the rack.
Sliding or swing gate motor?
It depends on the gate. A gate that slides along a track takes a sliding motor with a rack; a gate with one or two leaves that swing takes swing motors, arm-type or underground. If the gate has not been made yet, a sliding one needs less swing space, which helps on plots with a slope or a short driveway.
Can you motorise the gate I already have?
Usually yes, if the gate is in good condition: it slides or swings without effort, the track is straight and the structure can take the motor. If the gate rubs or has dropped, that has to be corrected first, because a motor does not fix badly adjusted mechanics and ends up burning out.
What safety features must an automatic gate have?
It must stop or reverse if it meets an obstacle, with closing forces limited under the UNE-EN 12453 standard, and have photocells and a warning lamp. This is especially important in homes with children or pets. We adjust and test these safety devices when we finish.
Can I open the gate from my phone or from the intercom?
Yes. The motor receiver can be connected to the button of the intercom or video door entry system, to a keypad with a code or to a module that opens it from your phone. That way you do not depend only on remotes and can let a visitor, a cleaner or holiday guests in even when you are not at home.
The gate stops halfway. Is the motor broken?
Not necessarily. A gate that stops halfway is often the safety system reacting to a dirty or misaligned photocell, or to extra effort because the gate rubs on the track. We check the power supply, the control board, the photocells and the mechanics before deciding whether the motor needs replacing.
