Outdoor socket installation in Seville, Spain: the one that is always missing

In Seville people live on the terrace, the patio and the garden for much of the year, and there is always a socket missing: for the electric barbecue, the griddle, the pool cleaner, the lawnmower, the string lights or the porch fan. The usual workaround, an extension lead from the living room, is exactly what you should avoid. We carry out the outdoor socket installation you need, with its protection, so you can use it with peace of mind even when it rains.

What it includes

  • Weatherproof sockets with cover and earth on terraces, patios, gardens and next to the barbecue.
  • Light points on pergolas and porches, with outdoor fittings switched by hand, by timer or by a dusk sensor.
  • Separate RCD for the outdoor circuits, so a leak outside does not plunge the house into darkness.
  • Buried cables in conduit to the bottom of the garden, with inspection pits.
  • Sheds, storerooms and detached garages: a cable and sub-board with its protection devices.
  • Power for awnings and bioclimatic pergolas, ready for the motor to be connected.

Typical cases in Seville

  • Penthouses and new-build terraces. In Palmas Altas and Isla Natura, Hacienda del Rosario or Entrenúcleos awnings on penthouse terraces are very common, and with them comes the request for one more weatherproof socket and a wall light.
  • Villas in the Aljarafe. In Tomares, Bormujos or Mairena del Aljarafe we are often asked for a socket by the barbecue, lights on the pergola and a cable to the shed at the end of the plot. For the pool, see swimming pool electrics, and for watering, irrigation and well pumps.
  • Patios of houses and ground floors. In Dos Hermanas or in Seville city, a weatherproof socket in the patio for the washing machine or the griddle, replacing the extension lead that came out of the window.
  • RCD tripping in the rain. The old terrace socket, with no cover or a dried-out seal, is a very common cause of tripping in autumn. More detail in RCD keeps tripping.

Regulations

The Spanish Low Voltage Electrotechnical Regulation (REBT) treats outdoor areas as wet locations (ITC-BT-30): weatherproof fittings and lights, boxes that do not collect water and 30 mA RCD protection. Sockets follow the UNE 20315 standard. Buried cables run in conduit under ITC-BT-07, and sub-boards in sheds and outbuildings comply with ITC-BT-17 and ITC-BT-21 for their protection and conduits. The rest of our outdoor work is under outdoor, pools and gates.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to put a socket on the terrace?

As an estimate, 60 to 150 euros plus 21 % VAT per point, depending on the distance from the nearest circuit, whether the cable is chased in, surface-mounted or buried, and whether a separate RCD has to be added in the fuse box. If you add several points in the same visit, the price per unit goes down.

Which socket should go outdoors?

A weatherproof socket with a cover, with the right degree of protection against water and dust (IP65 or higher in areas exposed to rain), with earth and protected by a 30 mA RCD. An indoor socket on a terrace ends up damp and trips the power every time it rains.

Why does the RCD trip when it rains?

Because water gets into a socket, a light or an outdoor box that is not weatherproof or has lost its seal, and causes an earth leakage. It is fixed by replacing that element with one suitable for outdoors and, where possible, putting the outdoor circuits on their own RCD so they do not leave the rest of the house without power.

Can you take power to a garden shed?

Yes. A cable is run underground in conduit, or overhead if the distance and the ground make that advisable, from the house fuse box to a sub-board in the shed with its own protection devices. As a reference, it costs 300 to 900 euros plus VAT depending on the distance and whether a trench has to be dug.

Can I have lights and sockets on the pergola?

Yes. We run the cable along the profiles or in discreet trunking and fit light points, weatherproof sockets for a fan or an outdoor heater and, if you want, the supply for a motorised awning. Everything protected by an RCD and with fittings suitable for outdoor use.

Can you fit UK sockets on my terrace?

No. In Spain the standard socket is the Schuko (Type F), and that is what the regulation and our installations use, indoors and out. UK appliances work at the same 230 V; they just need a proper adaptor or a Spanish plug fitted. For outdoor use, a plug change is safer than an adaptor left out in the weather.
