Schuko socket (Spanish Type F socket)

The standard household socket in Spain, rated 16 A, with two round pins and side earth clips (Type F). It works for any appliance, but only for occasional electric car charging. UK plugs need an adaptor or a plug change.

What a Schuko socket is

It is the earthed socket (outlet) you have at home in Spain. The name comes from German and refers to the earth contacts, the two metal strips on the sides. It is designed for 16 A, which at 230 V equals a maximum of 3,680 W. Sockets and plugs follow standard UNE 20315.

What it is for and its limits

It handles household appliances without trouble, even high-demand ones like an oven or a heater, because they run intermittently. The problem comes with high, continuous loads over many hours: the contacts heat up, especially if the socket is old, loose or the circuit is not prepared.

Schuko and electric cars

ITC-BT-52 defines the charging modes:

  • Mode 1 (Schuko with no communication with the car): in practice not used for cars, only for bicycles and light motorbikes.
  • Mode 2 (Schuko with the cable supplied with the car, which has a control box): the cable limits charging to 10 A, about 2.3 kW, adding 10 to 13 km per hour.

Charging a car this way means a socket at full load for 10 hours or more. That is why it is an emergency solution, not for daily use.

Alternatives

  • Dedicated socket (toma reforzada): a 16 A outlet with its own circuit and protection, to charge at 3.7 kW more safely.
  • Wallbox: a fixed mode 3 charger, 7.4 kW single-phase, with all the protection ITC-BT-52 requires.

If a socket heats up, has dark marks or the plug fits loosely, replace it. See EV charger installation in Seville, Spain.
