Swimming pool electrical installation in Seville, Spain: water and electricity kept well apart

A pool is the place at home where electricity has to be most carefully controlled: there is water, people walking barefoot and equipment running for hours in the sun. That is why the Spanish regulation gives it its own instruction, ITC-BT-31, which divides the area around the pool into zones 0, 1 and 2 and sets what can go in each one. We carry out swimming pool electrical installation for private pools in Seville in line with that instruction, both on new pools and on pools that have run for years with a makeshift control panel.

What it includes

  • Weatherproof filtration control panel, with circuit breakers, RCD, contactor and a timer or programmable clock.
  • Connection of the filtration pump and, if there is one, the heat pump or the salt chlorinator.
  • Underwater lighting with 12 V LED lights and their transformer outside the risk zones.
  • Weatherproof sockets for the pool cleaner and other equipment, with the right degree of protection.
  • Equipotential bonding of all the metal parts around the pool.
  • Legalisation with an electrical installation certificate filed with the Junta de Andalucía. More on that document in electrical certificate (boletín).

Typical cases in Seville and the Aljarafe

  • Villas and townhouses with a pool. In Tomares, Bormujos, Mairena del Aljarafe or Espartinas the private pool is part of the house, and it is common to find old filtration panels with no RCD of their own or a broken clock. New detached homes, such as Guiomar in Bormujos, Altos del Aire in Tomares or Enea in Entrenúcleos, also call for garden and pool lighting and irrigation.
  • The first autumn rains. When it rains after the summer, water gets into the pump house or an old light and the RCD starts to trip. It is the moment to check seals and insulation. If it is tripping right now, see RCD keeps tripping.
  • Communal pools. In developments with a pool, such as Habitat Puerta Cartuja in Camas or the new developments in Sevilla Este, we check the filtration panel of the communal pool, the pumps and the underwater lighting. Pools for public use also have their own health regulation (Royal Decree 742/2013).
  • Pool heating. More and more owners add a heat pump to swim in spring and autumn. If you also have solar panels, the filtration and the heat pump can use the midday production.

How we work

  1. We look at the pool and the pump house, and check the condition of the control panel, the pump and the lights.
  2. We measure insulation and earthing to detect leaks before they trip the RCD.
  3. We give you a fixed quote with what needs doing and what is worth improving.
  4. We install or renovate the panel, lights, sockets and equipotential bonding.
  5. We programme the filtration and hand you the installation certificate.

For sockets in the garden or by the barbecue, see outdoor sockets, and for watering the garden, irrigation and well pumps.

Regulations

ITC-BT-31 of the Spanish Low Voltage Electrotechnical Regulation covers swimming pools: zones 0, 1 and 2, safety extra-low voltage at 12 V in zones 0 and 1, RCD protection and equipotential bonding. Under ITC-BT-05, pools over 10 kW must pass a periodic inspection by an inspection body. The rest of our outdoor work is under outdoor, pools and gates.

Frequently asked questions

What voltage do pool lights run at in Spain?

Underwater lights and those in the zone closest to the water run at safety extra-low voltage, 12 volts, with their transformer outside that zone, as ITC-BT-31 requires. That way, even if a light developed a fault, the voltage would not be dangerous for anyone in the water.

Why will the pool pump not start?

It may be the timer or clock in the control panel, a tripped circuit breaker or RCD, a faulty contactor, the pump's start capacitor or the motor itself. We measure at the panel and at the pump to separate the electrical side from the mechanical side, and tell you whether it is worth repairing the motor or replacing the pump.

Why does the RCD trip when the pool filtration switches on?

Usually damp: water in the pump house, condensation in the control panel, a light that has lost its seal or a pump with a leak in its winding. We test the insulation of each element separately until we find the one at fault, and seal or replace the affected part.

What is pool equipotential bonding?

It is connecting all the metal parts around the pool (ladders, lights, accessible reinforcement, metal pipes) with a conductor so there can be no voltage differences between them. It is one of the most important protections in ITC-BT-31 and we check it on every new or renovated installation.

Does the pool electrical installation have to be legalised?

Yes. A new installation or a major renovation needs its electrical installation certificate (the boletín) issued by a registered installation company and filed with the Junta de Andalucía. If the power exceeds 10 kW, it must also pass a periodic inspection by an inspection body. We hand you the paperwork when we finish.

Can the pool be heated with a heat pump?

Yes, and it extends the swimming season considerably. The heat pump needs its own circuit and protection from the fuse box, and sometimes its own control panel. The electrical side costs a guide 200 to 600 euros plus VAT. First we check that your potencia contratada (contracted power) can take the heat pump together with the rest of the house.

I let my villa to holidaymakers. What should I check on the pool before the season?

Before guests arrive it is worth checking that the pump control panel has its own RCD and that the timer works, that the underwater lights run at 12 V and keep their seal, that the sockets near the pool are weatherproof and that the bonding is in place. We test the insulation and leave you a note of what we found.

Outdoor sockets, barbecues and pergolas

We carry out outdoor socket installation in Seville, Spain: the weatherproof socket (outlet in the US) you are missing on the terrace, by the barbecue, on the pergola or in the garden, with its own RCD so the whole house does not trip when it rains. We also fit lights on pergolas and porches and take electricity to sheds, storerooms and garages separate from the house.

RCD keeps tripping

If your RCD keeps tripping and will not stay up, there is a current leaking to earth somewhere in a circuit or an appliance. We locate it with an insulation tester, repair it and check that your RCD (GFCI) protects you as it should.

Legalising an installation

Legalising an electrical installation in Seville, Spain is how you put in order a home, business premises or villa that never had a boletín (electrical installation certificate) or that falls short of the regulations. We inspect the installation, bring it up to the Spanish wiring regulations, write the technical design report and register the certificate with the Junta de Andalucía.
