Electrical damage insurance claim assessment in Seville, Spain: cause and valuation
For an electrical damage insurance claim in Spain, an assessor determines why a fire, a power surge or a lightning strike happened and values what has been damaged. In Seville we inspect the installation, document the damage and prepare a technical report signed by a competent technician, to present to your insurer or to claim against the distributor.

What an electrical damage claims assessment is
When a storm leaves the house without power and with the router and the fridge burnt out, or when a socket ends in a small fire, two questions arise: what exactly happened, and who pays. An electrical claims assessor (perito de siniestros) answers the first with a technical analysis and provides the data needed to settle the second.
The report is signed by a competent technician in the field. We contribute the inspection of the installation, the measurements, the study of the damage and the costing of the repair at real prices.
What kinds of damage we assess
- Electrical fires: sockets (outlets), extension leads, junction boxes, fuse boards or appliances that have burnt.
- Power surges: appliances burnt at the same time in several rooms after a grid fault or after the supply was cut and restored.
- Lightning damage: nearby strikes affecting the installation, the TV aerial, the automatic gate or the irrigation system.
- Neutral faults in the service connection or in the building installation, causing abnormal voltages in several homes at once.
- Water damage that has reached the electrical installation and caused short circuits or earth leakage.
How we work
- First call. You tell us what happened, when and which appliances are affected. We tell you what to keep.
- Inspection of the installation: fuse board, protective devices, earthing, damaged points and, where relevant, the service connection and the building meter room.
- Study of the damage to appliances and parts of the installation, with photographs and the data of each item.
- Analysis of the cause from the evidence found: whether the origin lies in the grid, in the installation itself or in a particular appliance.
- Valuation of the repair and of the damaged equipment, item by item.
- Signed technical report, ready for your insurer, for the distributor or for your lawyer.
If what you need first is to get the power back and replace what is damaged, call our 24-hour emergency electrician. The assessment can be done afterwards, as long as the damaged items are kept.
Claiming against the distributor for a power surge
In Spain the distributor (distribuidora) owns the network and is responsible for supply quality under Royal Decree 1955/2000; in Seville and its province it is e-distribución. Your supplier (comercializadora), whether Endesa, Iberdrola or another, only sends the bill. If a surge coming from the grid burns your appliances, you can claim against the distributor. The difficulty is proving that the problem came from outside and not from your installation, and that is where a technical report makes the difference.
A typical case in an old block in Triana: several neighbours on the same staircase lose televisions, chargers and the boiler board at the same time. The inspection rules out faults inside the flats and points to a problem with the neutral in the common installation. With the report, each neighbour files their claim and the community of owners knows what to repair in its common installations.
Preventing the next incident
Much surge damage is avoided with surge protection in the fuse board, which ITC-BT-23 provides for to protect the installation. In villas and country houses, such as those in the Aljarafe or in the countryside around Utrera and Carmona, with aerial, irrigation, pump and automatic gate on the same installation, it is a small investment compared with the cost of replacing equipment. For holiday homes left empty for months, it is one of the first things we recommend.
Assessment for individuals, repairs for insurers
This page is for the policyholder or the affected party who needs their own report. If you are an insurance company looking for an installer to repair your policyholders’ claims, see insurance companies. And if the dispute has nothing to do with insurance but with defective work or installation, what you need is an electrical expert report.

Frequently asked questions
What does an electrical claims assessor do?
They establish the technical cause of electrical damage, such as a fire, a power surge, lightning or a grid fault, and value what has been damaged. They inspect the installation, take measurements and photographs and examine the damaged appliances. The result is a technical report used to process the claim with the insurer or to claim against whoever is responsible.
Does Spanish home insurance cover electrical damage?
It depends on your policy. Many Spanish home policies include electrical damage to the installation and to appliances, with limits and exclusions worth reading, including the English translation if your broker gave you one. The Insurance Contract Act (Ley de Contrato de Seguro) governs the relationship with the insurer, but the actual cover is set by your contract. Our report provides cause and valuation; the decision to pay is the insurer's.
Can I claim against the electricity company if a surge burnt my appliances?
Yes, if the damage was caused by a supply quality problem. The distributor is responsible for supply quality under Royal Decree 1955/2000, and in Seville that is e-distribución, not your supplier. To claim, you should be able to show the date, the appliances affected and that the cause came from the grid and not from your installation. That is what a technical report is for.
What should I do with the burnt appliances?
Do not throw them away or repair them before the insurer's assessor or ours has seen them. Photograph them with the rating plate visible, keep the purchase receipts if you have them and note the date and time of the event. If there is a risk, switch off the affected circuit, but leave the appliances as they are.
How much does an electrical claims assessment cost?
As a market estimate, 250 to 700 euros plus 21 % VAT depending on the scope: a television burnt by a surge is not the same as a fire affecting a whole kitchen. The price includes the inspection, the report and the valuation. We give you a fixed quote before starting.
My insurer already has an assessor. Why would I want another one?
The insurer's assessor works for the insurance company. If you disagree with their conclusion on the cause or with the valuation of the damage, your own technical report lets you argue the point with evidence. The Insurance Contract Act provides for policyholder and insurer each appointing their own assessor when they cannot agree.
The damage happened in my holiday home while I was abroad. What now?
Ask a neighbour, key holder or property manager to photograph the damage and leave everything as it is, then tell your insurer. We can inspect with whoever holds the keys, document the installation and the damaged equipment and send you the report, so the claim can move forward without you travelling to Seville.
