Appliance tripping the electricity in Seville, Spain: leakage and overload diagnosis
If an appliance keeps tripping the electricity in your Seville home, we measure its insulation and consumption to find out whether it has a leak, whether it overloads the circuit or whether the problem lies in the installation. We tell you which appliance is failing, whether it is worth repairing and whether your circuit needs improving, with a clear diagnosis before you spend money on anything.

Appliance tripping the electricity: three different causes
When an appliance trips the electricity, the first thing is to look at what has tripped in the fuse box (consumer unit, or breaker panel in the US), because each protection device tells a different story:
- The RCD trips (the diferencial, GFCI in the US). There is a current leak to earth, almost always in the appliance itself (heating element, motor, internal wiring) or in its socket. More detail in RCD keeps tripping.
- The circuit breaker trips (the magnetotérmico, or MCB). The circuit is overloaded: the appliance draws more current than the circuit can supply, or it shares the circuit with other powerful appliances.
- The limiter in the meter trips (the ICP). The total of everything switched on exceeds your contracted power, and the smart meter cuts the supply until you switch something off and reset it.
Our job is to find out which of the three it is and why, with measurements, not by changing parts at random.
How we carry out the diagnosis
- We check the fuse box: which protection trips, and at what moment (on start-up, mid-programme, in the early hours).
- We measure the insulation of the suspect appliance with an insulation tester, to see whether it leaks.
- We measure the consumption of the appliance while running and compare it with the capacity of the circuit.
- We check the circuit and the earthing with the appliance disconnected, to rule out the installation.
- We give you the result: appliance with a leak, undersized circuit, too little contracted power or a fault in the installation, with the solution and its price.
Typical cases in Seville
- The fridge that trips in the early hours. Very common in summer: the defrost heater or damp in the compressor causes a leak just when nobody is awake. You wake up to a house without power and warm food.
- Oven and hob at the same time. In 1970s and 1980s kitchens in La Macarena, Nervión or Cerro-Amate, the oven and the hob share a thin circuit. Switching to induction makes it worse; the solution is usually a dedicated circuit for the hob.
- Washing machine giving a tingle. A washing machine in an enclosed balcony with no reliable earthing can give you a shock when you touch it. It is a serious warning sign and should be checked straight away.
- Air conditioning and everything else. In the middle of a heatwave, in flats in Sevilla Este or Dos Hermanas, the air conditioning plus the oven plus the washing machine exceed the contracted power and the limiter trips.
Guide prices
| Job | Guide price (plus 21 % VAT) | Total with VAT |
|---|---|---|
| Diagnosis of appliance and circuit | 70 to 100 euros | 84.70 to 121 euros |
| New socket for washing machine or dishwasher | 40 to 120 euros | 48.40 to 145.20 euros |
| Circuit for an induction hob | 320 to 450 euros | 387.20 to 544.50 euros |
The diagnosis tells you what is failing before you spend on repairs. If the cause is the appliance, we tell you so you can decide with its manufacturer’s service whether it is worth fixing. More references on the prices page.
Regulations
Protection against leakage and indirect contact, which is what makes the RCD trip, is regulated by ITC-BT-24 of the Spanish Low Voltage Electrotechnical Regulation, and the kitchen, washing machine and water heater circuits, with their cable size and protection, by ITC-BT-25. If the water heater is the culprit, see electric water heaters. If the power trips at night and you cannot wait, our 24-hour emergency electrician can help. The rest of our services are under air conditioning and appliances.

Frequently asked questions
Which appliance is tripping the electricity?
The usual suspects are those that combine water and heating elements: water heater, washing machine, dishwasher, oven and fridge. To find out, switch off all the breakers, reset the RCD and switch the circuits back on one by one; then unplug the appliances on that circuit one at a time. If that does not find it, we measure the insulation of each appliance.
Why does the fridge trip the RCD?
It is usually a leak in the defrost heater, damp in the compressor or its connections, or a damaged cable behind the appliance. It often trips in the early hours, when the fridge runs its defrost cycle. We measure its insulation and tell you whether the leak is in the fridge or in the socket and the circuit.
Why does the power go off when I switch on the oven?
If the RCD trips, the oven may have a leaking element. If the kitchen breaker trips, the circuit is overloaded, especially if the oven and the hob share a circuit. If the limiter in the meter trips, you are short of potencia contratada (contracted power). Each case has a different solution, which is why we measure first.
My washing machine gives me a tingle. Is it dangerous?
Yes. If you feel a tingle when you touch the washing machine, there is a leak and the earthing (grounding in the US) is not taking it away properly. Unplug it and do not use it until it has been checked. We test the insulation of the appliance and the earth of the socket, because poor earthing is what lets the leak reach your hand.
How much does the diagnosis cost?
As a reference, 70 to 100 euros plus 21 % VAT, with measurement of the insulation and consumption of the appliance and a check of its circuit and protection. If the problem is an undersized circuit, we quote the improvement; if it is the appliance, we tell you which part fails so you can decide with the manufacturer's service whether it is worth repairing.
Can I use the appliances I brought from the UK?
Spain also runs at 230 V, so most UK appliances work, but Spanish sockets are Schuko (Type F), so a UK plug needs a proper adaptor or a plug change. A cheap adaptor that heats up, or an old appliance with a worn cable, can itself cause tripping. If an appliance trips the power in every socket, we measure its insulation.
Related services
RCD keeps tripping
If your RCD keeps tripping and will not stay up, there is a current leaking to earth somewhere in a circuit or an appliance. We locate it with an insulation tester, repair it and check that your RCD (GFCI) protects you as it should.
MCB keeps tripping
If your MCB keeps tripping when you switch on the oven, the air conditioning or the washing machine, that circuit is overloaded or has a fault. We check the line, spread the loads or replace the circuit breaker (magnetotérmico) so your kitchen or living room stops losing power.
Power limiter tripping
If your smart meter keeps cutting the power when you switch several things on at once, the ICP power limiter is tripping because you are exceeding your contracted power (potencia contratada). We review your consumption and your installation and tell you whether organising your appliances is enough or whether it is worth increasing the power in Seville, Spain.
Electric shocks from taps
If you get electric shocks from taps (faucets), the shower, the washing machine or the fridge, a metal part is live and the current is not being carried to earth. That is a real risk of electrocution. In Seville, Spain we check the earthing (grounding), the protective conductors and the insulation of your appliances to find the fault and remove it.
Induction hob circuit
The induction hob electrical requirements in Spain are clear: to fit an induction hob (cooktop) in Seville properly, the electrician runs a dedicated 6 mm² line from the fuse board, with its own 25 or 32 A circuit breaker and a connection box behind the unit. That way the hob works at full power and the electricity does not trip when it coincides with the oven.
Kitchen electrics
Kitchen electrics in Seville, Spain need dedicated lines for the induction hob (cooktop) and the oven, another for the washing machine, dishwasher and water heater, and enough sockets along the worktop. We wire the circuits with the cross-section and protection the Spanish regulations require, in a new kitchen or when you swap gas for induction.
