Electric water heater installation in Seville, Spain: replacement, connection and a compliant circuit

For an electric water heater installation in Seville, Spain we leave the heater (the termo, as it is called in Spain) on its own circuit with the 4 mm² cable and 20 A breaker the regulation requires, an earthed connection and the appliance working. We replace old heaters, fix the termo that trips the RCD or will not heat, and check the socket that runs hot.

Electric water heater installation in Seville, Spain with the right circuit

Most Spanish flats heat their water with an electric storage heater, the termo (an unvented cylinder or tank water heater, in UK and US terms). It is one of the appliances that draws most power in a home, and it does so for hours. Connected properly, it gives no trouble for years. Plugged into any old socket with thin cable, it ends up burning the socket, tripping the RCD or leaving you without hot water. When we handle an electric water heater installation in Seville we take care of both: the appliance and the installation that feeds it.

What it includes

  • Heater replacement: removing the old one, mounting the new one on the wall with fixings suited to its weight, and the electrical connection.
  • Compliant circuit: circuit C4 with 4 mm² cable and a 20 A breaker, or a check that the existing one complies.
  • Earthing (grounding in the US) tested, because the heater combines water and electricity.
  • RCD protection checked, so a leak in the heater cuts the power.
  • Direct connection or a suitable socket, to avoid sockets that run hot.
  • Disposal of the old heater through an authorised waste handler.

We coordinate the plumbing side (water connections, safety valve, drain) so the heater is left complete and working.

Faults we fix

  • The heater trips the RCD. The most likely cause is a leaking element. We measure insulation before deciding; for more on the RCD tripping, see RCD keeps tripping.
  • The heater will not heat. We check the supply, the thermostat and the element.
  • The heater socket gets hot or is burnt. We replace the socket and check the whole circuit.
  • The breaker trips when the heater and the washing machine run together. A sign that they share a circuit with cable that is too thin. If it is another appliance, see appliance tripping the power.

Typical cases in Seville

In flats from the 1960s to the 1980s in La Macarena, Cerro-Amate, San Pablo or Triana, the heater is usually in the galería or the utility room, plugged into a general-purpose socket with cable that is not 4 mm². It is a frequent cause of blackened sockets and tripped breakers. When the kitchen or bathroom is renovated, it is the moment to give it its own circuit; we do it as part of the bathroom electrics or the kitchen rewiring.

If you are thinking of replacing the electric heater with a heat pump water heater or with aerotermia (an air-to-water heat pump), the electrical connection of that equipment costs a guide 80 to 250 euros plus VAT.

How we work

  1. You send us a photo of the heater, its socket and the fuse box.
  2. We give you a fixed price, with or without the appliance, and whether a new circuit is needed.
  3. We install or repair, testing the earthing and the RCD.
  4. We fill and test the heater until it heats and cuts out on its thermostat.

Regulations

The water heater belongs to circuit C4 of the home as defined in ITC-BT-25 of the Spanish Low Voltage Electrotechnical Regulation, with 4 mm² cable and 20 A protection, and must be protected by a 30 mA RCD. If it is installed in a bathroom, the protection zones of ITC-BT-27 apply. The rest of our appliance and air conditioning connections are under air conditioning and appliances.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to install an electric water heater in Seville, Spain?

As a market reference, 100 to 600 euros plus 21 % VAT, with an average of about 430 euros. The lower end is connecting a heater you already have to an existing socket; the upper end is replacing the heater with the appliance included and running a new circuit from the fuse box. We give you a fixed price after seeing where it goes.

Why does my water heater trip the RCD?

Almost always because of an earth leakage in the heating element, which cracks with limescale and age and lets current through to the water or the casing. It can also be damp in the connection or the socket. We measure the insulation of the heater and the circuit to know whether the element, the heater or the connection needs replacing.

Why does the water heater socket get hot?

Because the heater draws a lot of power for hours, and any loose contact or low-quality socket heats up. If the socket is blackened or smells of burning, unplug the heater and do not use it until it has been checked. The usual fix is to replace the socket, check the circuit and, where possible, connect the heater directly with its own protection.

Does the water heater need its own circuit?

The Spanish regulation places it on circuit C4, together with the washing machine and the dishwasher, with 4 mm² cable and a 20 A breaker. In many older homes the heater hangs off a general-purpose socket with thinner cable, which explains a lot of burnt sockets. We tell you whether your installation complies.

My electric water heater will not heat. Can you fix it?

We check the electrical side: that power reaches it, the protection in the fuse box, the connection, the thermostat and the heating element. If the fault is in one of these parts and the heater is in good condition, we replace that part. If the tank leaks or the heater is many years old, we recommend replacing it rather than repairing it.

Can the water heater go in the bathroom?

Yes, respecting the bathroom protection zones set by the regulation: the heater and its connection must stay out of the areas where they can get wet directly, or have the right degree of protection. In many Seville flats the heater is in the utility room or the enclosed balcony (galería), which is usually a better place.

Kitchen electrics

Kitchen electrics in Seville, Spain need dedicated lines for the induction hob (cooktop) and the oven, another for the washing machine, dishwasher and water heater, and enough sockets along the worktop. We wire the circuits with the cross-section and protection the Spanish regulations require, in a new kitchen or when you swap gas for induction.

Bathroom electrics

We install bathroom electrics in Seville, Spain following the protection zones of ITC-BT-27: earthed sockets where they are allowed, extractor fan, electric towel rail, illuminated mirror and equipotential bonding. For renovations and for bathrooms that give you small shocks or trip the power today.

RCD keeps tripping

If your RCD keeps tripping and will not stay up, there is a current leaking to earth somewhere in a circuit or an appliance. We locate it with an insulation tester, repair it and check that your RCD (GFCI) protects you as it should.

Appliances tripping the power

If an appliance keeps tripping the electricity in your Seville home, we measure its insulation and consumption to find out whether it has a leak, whether it overloads the circuit or whether the problem lies in the installation. We tell you which appliance is failing, whether it is worth repairing and whether your circuit needs improving, with a clear diagnosis before you spend money on anything.

Heat pump electrics

We carry out the heat pump electrical connection in Seville, Spain for aerothermal systems (aerotermia): a dedicated line from the fuse board, its own protections, adapting your contracted power and, if the unit's data sheet requires it, moving to three-phase, with the boletín registered with the Junta de Andalucía. You choose the unit and its heating installer; we leave the electrics ready and safe.

Earthing

Earthing (grounding in the US, toma de tierra in Spain) is what allows your RCD to protect you from an electric shock. In Seville, Spain we carry out earthing installation and testing in flats and houses: earth rods or buried conductor, main earth line, connection of every circuit and a resistance measurement to confirm it works.
