Bathroom electrics in Seville, Spain: why the bathroom has its own rules

Water greatly reduces the body’s resistance, which is why the bathroom is the room in the house with the strictest electrical rules. The Spanish Low Voltage Electrotechnical Regulation (REBT) devotes a whole instruction to it, ITC-BT-27, on rooms containing a bath or shower. It divides the space into protection zones (0, 1 and 2) around the bath and the shower tray, and sets what can be installed in each one and with what degree of protection. Protection against electric shock is completed by ITC-BT-24.

If you are used to British rules, the idea is the same as the bathroom zones you may know from home, but the details, the sockets and the paperwork are Spanish. Good bathroom electrics are not about adding a socket where you need one, but about putting it where it is allowed: outside the zones, earthed (grounded in the US) and behind a 30 mA RCD.

What we do in your bathroom

  • Sockets next to the washbasin for a hairdryer, toothbrush or shaver, outside the zones and earthed.
  • Extractor fan with a timer or linked to the light, essential in bathrooms with no window.
  • Electric towel rail, with its fixed connection and the right protection.
  • Illuminated mirror or LED strip in a niche, fed at extra-low voltage when it is close to the water.
  • Shower light with a sealed fitting designed for that zone.
  • Equipotential bonding that joins pipes, drains and metal parts to the earth of the home.
  • Water heater line if the termo (electric water heater) is in the bathroom, on its own compliant circuit.

Typical bathrooms in Seville and what we usually find

  • Flats from the 1960s and 1970s in Triana, La Macarena or Los Remedios. Bathrooms with no earth, a socket right next to the basin and old cables in damp boxes. This is where small shocks from taps and showers and RCD trips come from. If the whole flat is from that era, it is worth considering rewiring the old installation. More about the area on our Triana and Los Remedios pages.
  • New-build homes in Sevilla Este or Entrenúcleos. The installation is correct, but it is handed over with no towel rail, a single light and no mirror lighting. It is one of the first things people ask for when they move in. See our pages on Sevilla Este and Entrenúcleos.
  • Villas in the Aljarafe, such as in Tomares. Large en suite bathrooms with several lighting zones, underfloor heating and an extractor fan; here it usually pays to give the bathroom its own circuit from the fuse board.

How we work

  1. We look at the bathroom, measure the zones according to the shape of the bath or tray, and check the earth and the RCD.
  2. We propose where each point goes and what degree of protection it needs.
  3. We give you a fixed price in writing before we start.
  4. We carry out the work in coordination with the tiler if you are renovating, so the chases are made before the tiles go on.
  5. We measure and test: insulation, earth continuity and RCD tripping.

If you are redoing the whole bathroom, we fit the electrics into the renovation so the walls are only opened once.

Frequently asked questions

Can I have a socket in the bathroom near the shower?

Not inside the protection zones that ITC-BT-27 marks around the bath and the shower. Ordinary sockets go outside those zones, earthed and protected by a 30 mA RCD (GFCI in the US). The distance depends on the shape of the shower tray or bath and on the screen, so we measure it in your bathroom before opening the wall.

Can I use my UK shaver socket or plug in a Spanish bathroom?

Spanish bathrooms use the standard Schuko socket (type F) outside the protection zones, not the dedicated shaver sockets common in British bathrooms. A UK plug needs an adaptor or a plug change. What matters for safety is where the socket goes, that it is earthed and that it sits behind a 30 mA RCD.

What lights can I put in the bathroom?

It depends on the zone they go in. The closer to the water, the higher the IP protection rating the fitting needs and the more restrictions apply. Outside the zones you can fit almost any light; over the shower only fittings designed for it. For mirrors and niches we use sealed strips or fittings with the power supply outside the wet area.

How much does it cost to fit an electric towel rail or an extractor fan?

As a guide, connecting an electric towel rail, an extractor fan with a timer or a small appliance costs 50 to 120 euros plus 21 % VAT per appliance (60.50 to 145.20 euros in total), without the equipment. A new line from the fuse box or chasing the wall is added to the quote. We give you a fixed price after seeing the bathroom or from photos.

Does the bathroom need an earth connection?

Yes. All sockets and appliances with metal parts must be earthed, and ITC-BT-27 also requires the metal parts of the bathroom to be joined with equipotential bonding. Many flats in Seville from the 1960s and 1970s have no earth in the bathroom, and that is the usual cause of small shocks from taps and showers.

Can I have a light inside the shower?

Yes, with sealed fittings designed for that zone and the right power supply. These lights are usually fed at safety extra-low voltage, with the power supply or transformer outside the shower, somewhere ventilated and accessible. An ordinary spotlight from the hallway ceiling will not do.

Why does the power trip when I switch on the hairdryer in the bathroom?

If the circuit breaker trips, the circuit is overloaded or old with thin cables. If the RCD trips, there is a leak, often from damp in a box or a bathroom socket. Either way it is worth checking: we measure it, find the fault and, if needed, give the bathroom its own circuit.
