Induction hob electrical requirements: dedicated circuit in Seville, Spain

The induction hob electrical requirements in Spain are clear: to fit an induction hob (cooktop) in Seville properly, the electrician runs a dedicated 6 mm² line from the fuse board, with its own 25 or 32 A circuit breaker and a connection box behind the unit. That way the hob works at full power and the electricity does not trip when it coincides with the oven.

What an induction hob needs to work properly

An induction hob is one of the most powerful appliances in the home. With every zone at maximum it can draw a lot of current, which is why it needs its own line, sized for that load. ITC-BT-25 of the Spanish Low Voltage Electrotechnical Regulation sets out the kitchen circuit (C3) with 6 mm² cable, and for higher-power hobs the manufacturer may ask for 32 A protection instead of 25 A. Having the induction hob installed by an electrician who checks everything avoids the most typical problems:

  • The breaker trips when you use several zones or switch on the oven at the same time.
  • The connection box or the cable heats up behind the unit.
  • The hob runs limited because the installation cannot give it more.

What the installation includes

  • A prior check of the fuse board, the existing kitchen line and your contracted power.
  • A dedicated 6 mm² line from the fuse board to the kitchen, recessed or through the space behind the units.
  • A 25 or 32 A circuit breaker depending on the hob, and a suitable RCD. In kitchens with modern electronics we recommend a type A RCD, which detects the leakages of inverter appliances better.
  • A connection box behind the hob, accessible for future checks.
  • Connecting the hob and testing it at full power.

From ceramic to induction

It is the most common change in Seville kitchens. In the 1960s to 1980s flats of Nervión, Los Remedios, Triana, La Macarena or Heliópolis, the electric cooker or ceramic hob was added in an old renovation, often with a thinner line than needed or one shared with the oven. The new induction hob exposes it: the power trips while you cook, or the cable heats up.

In these cases we run a new line and, if the fuse board is old or has no space, we extend it (see fuse board replacement). If you are doing renovation electrics, it is the moment to leave the kitchen ready with all its lines: hob, oven, dishwasher, hood and worktop sockets. We explain it on our kitchen electrics service.

When the power trips while you cook

If the problem appears when you use the hob and the oven together, there are two possibilities:

  1. A breaker in the fuse board trips. The two appliances share the kitchen circuit and together exceed its protection. The solution is to give the hob its own line. There is more detail on MCB keeps tripping.
  2. The whole home cuts out. You have exceeded your contracted power and the smart meter has cut the supply, as explained on power limiter tripping. You can increase your contracted power or limit the hob’s maximum consumption from its settings, something many models allow.

New homes and kitchens with an island

In the new-build homes of Sevilla Este, Dos Hermanas or Mairena del Aljarafe, the hob line comes ready. What we are asked to do is move the hob to an island, change it for a more powerful model or add a second oven. Each of those changes requires the line to be checked or extended, and it is much simpler before the units are fitted. All-electric new builds, with induction, a heat pump and sometimes an EV charger, are also where an underestimated contracted power most easily leads to repeated power cuts, so it is worth checking it when you get the keys.

Frequently asked questions

What cable does an induction hob need in Spain?

The usual is a 6 mm² line protected with a 25 A circuit breaker, or 32 A if the hob is high-power and the manufacturer says so. It is the kitchen circuit (C3) provided for in ITC-BT-25. With thinner cable, the line heats up and the breaker trips when you use several zones at once.

Why does the power go off when I switch on the oven and the hob together?

For one of two reasons. If a breaker in the fuse board trips, the oven and the hob share a circuit and together exceed its protection: it is solved by giving the hob its own line. If the whole home cuts out, you have exceeded your contracted power, and you either increase it or limit the hob's power from its menu.

Can I swap a ceramic hob for induction without touching the installation?

Sometimes, if the existing line has the cross-section and protection the new hob requires. In many older kitchens, however, the ceramic hob hangs off a thinner line or one shared with the oven, and induction needs a new line. We check it before you buy the hob so there are no surprises.

How much does the electrical installation of an induction hob cost in Seville, Spain?

As a guide, from 320 euros for a two-zone hob to 450 euros for a four-zone one, plus 21 % VAT (387.20 to 544.50 euros in total), with dedicated line, protection and connection box. If the fuse board has no space or needs adapting, or the run is long, it is quoted separately.

Do I have to increase my power to fit an induction hob?

It depends on the power of the hob and what runs at the same time in your home. Many hobs let you limit their maximum consumption from the menu, which avoids increasing the contracted power (potencia contratada). If you also have air conditioning, an oven and a water heater, we review the loads and tell you whether to increase it or configure the hob.

Can an induction hob go on the kitchen island?

Yes, but the line has to reach the island, usually through the floor or the false ceiling if the hood also hangs from above. In a new build or a renovation it is the ideal moment, because it can be done without breaking a finished floor. We also leave whatever auxiliary sockets you need on the island.

Kitchen electrics

Kitchen electrics in Seville, Spain need dedicated lines for the induction hob (cooktop) and the oven, another for the washing machine, dishwasher and water heater, and enough sockets along the worktop. We wire the circuits with the cross-section and protection the Spanish regulations require, in a new kitchen or when you swap gas for induction.

MCB keeps tripping

If your MCB keeps tripping when you switch on the oven, the air conditioning or the washing machine, that circuit is overloaded or has a fault. We check the line, spread the loads or replace the circuit breaker (magnetotérmico) so your kitchen or living room stops losing power.

Increase contracted power

You need to increase your electricity power in Spain when the smart meter cuts everything off as soon as the air conditioning, the oven and the washing machine run together. We check what power your installation can take, upgrade the supply cable, main switch and fuse board if needed, and issue the boletín so the distributor approves the increase.

Renovation electrics

If you are renovating your flat, renovation electrics in Seville, Spain are the moment to bring the installation up to the way you live today: new kitchen and bathroom circuits, fuse board, chases and conduits, light points where you need them and the boletín at the end. We work in coordination with your builder or renovation company.

Fuse board replacement

A consumer unit replacement in Seville, Spain is the upgrade that adds the most safety without building work: main switch, several RCDs, one breaker per circuit and surge protection. We replace your old fuse box, or a board with a single RCD, with a new fuse board (breaker panel) sized for your power and your circuits.

Power limiter tripping

If your smart meter keeps cutting the power when you switch several things on at once, the ICP power limiter is tripping because you are exceeding your contracted power (potencia contratada). We review your consumption and your installation and tell you whether organising your appliances is enough or whether it is worth increasing the power in Seville, Spain.
