V2H (vehicle to home)

V2H (vehicle to home) lets the electric car battery power your home, as back-up in a power cut or to use stored solar energy at night. Unlike V2G, the energy does not go out to the grid.

What V2H is

V2H (vehicle to home) is a form of bidirectional charging in which the electric car battery powers your home. The car stops being just a load and works as a large home battery on wheels.

What it is for

  • Back-up in power cuts: if the street supply fails, the house keeps running on the car’s energy.
  • Using solar energy: charge the car during the day from your panels and let the house use that energy at night instead of buying it.
  • Avoiding expensive hours: the home draws on the car battery in peak hours.

V2H and V2G

With V2H the energy goes from the car to your home and stays there. With V2G it is fed into the distributor’s network to be paid for, which in Spain still has no specific payment. V2H, by contrast, can already be installed with approved equipment.

What you need

  • A bidirectional charger and a compatible car (for example Nissan Leaf, Kia EV6 or Hyundai Ioniq 5, depending on version).
  • A system that isolates the home from the grid during the power cut, so no voltage is sent to the street while crews are working.
  • A board prepared for that island mode.

V2H or a home battery

A typical home battery holds 5 to 15 kWh; an electric car battery is around 60 kWh or more. V2H gives much more capacity, but only while the car is parked and plugged in.
