Solar self-consumption (autoconsumo fotovoltaico)

Producing part of the electricity you use with solar panels at your own home or business, under Royal Decree 244/2019. The surplus can be exported to the grid and credited on your bill, stored in a battery or not generated at all.

How self-consumption works

The panels generate direct current, the inverter converts it to alternating current and the house uses it before buying energy from the grid. It is governed by Royal Decree 244/2019 and, on the electrical side, ITC-BT-40 of the REBT.

Types of self-consumption

  • Without surplus: an anti-export system stops energy going to the grid. Less paperwork, but you waste the surplus.
  • With surplus and compensation: what you export is credited on your bill. The most common option for homes.
  • With surplus, no compensation: you sell the energy on the market, typical of large installations.

Individual or shared

Individual self-consumption serves a single consumer: your house, unit or shop. In shared self-consumption (autoconsumo colectivo), several consumers, such as the owners in a block of flats, share one installation and split the energy by coefficients.

Self-consumption in Seville

Seville has about 3,000 hours of sunshine a year and each kWp produces 1,600 to 1,750 kWh a year. As a 2026 price reference, a 5 kW system costs 5,500 to 7,000 euros, and a 6 kWp system with a 5 kWh battery 10,000 to 14,000 euros. The average residential saving was 189 euros per kW per year in 2025.

Design, legalisation and compensation are done by a registered installation company. See solar panels in Seville, Spain.
