Surplus compensation (compensación de excedentes)

Mechanism under Royal Decree 244/2019 by which the solar energy you export to the grid is credited on your electricity bill. The credit never exceeds the cost of the energy you bought in that billing period.

What surplus compensation is

It is the simplest way to benefit from the solar energy you do not use at the time. At midday your panels usually produce more than the house uses, and that surplus (excedentes) goes out to the grid. With simplified compensation under Royal Decree 244/2019, your supplier credits the value of those exported kWh on your bill.

How the credit is calculated

  • Each exported kWh is valued at a price that depends on your contract: on the PVPC, the hourly market price; on the free market, the price agreed with your supplier. That price is usually well below what you pay to buy energy.
  • The credit has a ceiling: it never exceeds the cost of the energy bought in that billing period. Anything above is, in principle, lost.
  • The power charge and related taxes are always paid: compensation only acts on energy.

Some suppliers offer a “virtual battery” that stores in euros what does not fit on the month’s bill. It is each company’s commercial product, with its own conditions.

How to activate it

  1. The installation company issues the boletín for your self-consumption system and files it with the Junta de Andalucía.
  2. The distributor updates your access contract and meter.
  3. You sign the compensation agreement with your supplier.

Compensate or store in a battery

If surplus is paid poorly and you use a lot at night, a home battery may pay off more than exporting. Another option is moving loads to midday: charging the car, the washing machine or the water heater while the panels produce.
