kWp (kilowatt peak, kilovatio pico)

The kWp (kilowatt peak) is the maximum power solar panels deliver under standard test conditions. It is used to compare systems: around Seville, Spain each kWp produces, as a guide, 1,600 to 1,750 kWh a year.

kWp (kilowatt peak)

What kWp means

The kWp, or kilowatt peak, is the power solar panels deliver under standard laboratory conditions: 1,000 W of irradiance per square metre and 25 °C at the cell. It is the figure on every panel data sheet and in quotes, and it lets you compare systems. Ten 450 Wp panels give you 4.5 kWp.

kWp and kW

  • kWp: panel power, in DC and under ideal conditions.
  • Inverter kW: the maximum AC power the solar inverter can deliver to the home.

It is normal to install somewhat more kWp than inverter kW, because panels rarely work at peak power. So a quote may say “5.4 kWp with a 5 kW inverter”.

How much one kWp produces in Seville, Spain

The area gets around 3,000 hours of sunshine a year, and each kWp installed produces roughly 1,600 to 1,750 kWh a year, depending on orientation, tilt and shade.

How many kWp you need

Divide your annual consumption in kWh (shown on your bill) by about 1,600. For example, an electric car driving 15,000 km a year uses 2,400 to 2,550 kWh, covered by about 2 extra kWp if you charge in daylight. Self-consumption pays best when you use power while it is being produced, so covering 100 % is not always worth it.

Rough price

In 2026 a residential system costs 850 to 1,300 euros per kWp, and a 5 kW system 5,500 to 7,000 euros. Average residential savings were 189 euros per kW per year in 2025. See solar panels and solar panel payback in Seville, Spain.
