CAE (Certificado de Ahorro Energético, energy saving certificate)
Certificado de Ahorro Energético: a document that certifies the energy saved by an efficiency measure, such as installing an EV charger. Regulated by Royal Decree 36/2023, it lets you sell that saving in exchange for a discount or a payment.
What CAE certificates are
Certificados de ahorro energético (CAE) are energy saving certificates: documents proving that a measure has saved a specific amount of energy, in kWh. The scheme is regulated by Royal Decree 36/2023 and supervised by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition. Each CAE equals one kWh of final energy saved.
How it works
Large energy companies have yearly energy saving obligations. They can meet them by buying CAE generated by other people’s efficiency measures. So the saving you achieve by improving your home or business becomes something with economic value.
In practice, you do not process the certificates yourself: you sign over your savings to an intermediary, the so-called delegated party (sujeto delegado), who prepares and verifies the file and pays you or gives you a discount.
CAE and EV chargers
Installing electric vehicle charging points is one of the recognised measures. According to 2026 market research, some installers and suppliers pay between 150 and 400 euros per charger installed in exchange for that saving, as a guide. The scheme also covers other efficiency measures.
Usual requirements
- The measure must be new and not already assigned to someone else.
- An itemised invoice and the installation certificate from the registered installer.
- Photos, technical data of the equipment and the signed assignment within the deadlines set by the delegated party.
Alongside other benefits
Each case should be checked, but the CAE is a commercial discount route separate from the 15 % income tax (IRPF) deduction for EV chargers, in force until 31 December 2026. See paperwork management in Seville, Spain.
