FAQ
How can I tell if my house in Spain has earthing (grounding)?
To tell if your house has earthing, check whether the sockets have the two metal clips on the sides and whether a green and yellow cable reaches an earth bar in the fuse box. These are clues, not proof: only a measurement with a dedicated instrument confirms it is connected and its value is correct.
How to tell if your house has earthing: visible signs
Earthing (grounding in the US), called toma de tierra in Spain, is the protection that carries away any leak before it reaches you. There are signs you can check without opening anything:
- The sockets. Spanish Schuko sockets with earth have two metal clips on the sides, as well as the two holes. If a socket has no clips, it has no earth.
- The fuse box. In a modern board a green and yellow cable reaches an earth bar or terminal, and each circuit’s earth wire leaves from there.
- The age of the installation. In older homes that were never renovated it is common for there to be no earth at all, or for it not to reach every point.
Why the signs are not enough
Some sockets have earth clips connected to nothing, because the socket was changed but the cable was never run. And in some buildings the cable exists but the connection to the ground has deteriorated. That is why the only reliable proof is to measure.
How it is measured
The electrician uses a dedicated tester to check:
- Continuity of the protective conductor from each socket to the fuse box.
- Earth resistance, in ohms: the lower, the better.
- That the RCD (diferencial) trips correctly when there is a leak.
With those readings you will know whether your installation is really protected.
What happens if you have no earth
Without earth, a leak in the washing machine, water heater or oven stays in the appliance casing until someone touches it. The installation also fails to comply with Spanish regulations (ITC-BT-18), and you will not get a new boletín (electrical certificate) without fixing it. The solution is to drive earth rods or lay a buried conductor, run the main earth line and connect every circuit. In a flat (apartment), it depends on the building having an earth network to connect to.
What it costs
| Job | Guide price |
|---|---|
| Testing earth, insulation and RCDs | 70 to 150 euros |
| Installing or improving the earthing (estimate) | 250 to 600 euros |
The second price has no reliable public reference and depends a lot on access to the ground.
When to call an electrician
Call if your sockets have no earth clips, if an appliance gives you a shock or if you are buying an older home. In Seville, Spain, we test it through electrical safety testing and, before you sign, with an electrical survey before buying.

Earthing
Earthing (grounding in the US, toma de tierra in Spain) is what allows your RCD to protect you from an electric shock. In Seville, Spain we carry out earthing installation and testing in flats and houses: earth rods or buried conductor, main earth line, connection of every circuit and a resistance measurement to confirm it works.
Safety testing
Electrical safety testing of your installation in Seville, Spain with calibrated instruments: earth electrode resistance, cable insulation, loop impedance and the tripping of every RCD. You receive a report with the measured values and what needs correcting, for 70 to 150 euros plus VAT in a home.
