Power factor correction in Seville, Spain: capacitor banks to remove the reactive energy penalty

We install power factor correction in Seville, Spain with a capacitor bank, so you stop paying the reactive energy surcharge that appears on the bills of many warehouses, workshops, hotels and shops. We measure with a power quality analyser, size the bank in kVAr and leave it adjusted so the penalty disappears.

Power factor correction in Seville, Spain: stop paying for reactive energy

If your company’s electricity bill shows an amount for reactive energy, you are paying for something that can be eliminated. Reactive energy is demanded by motors, compressors, pumps, transformers and refrigeration equipment in order to work, but it does no useful work: it flows back and forth along the cables. Power factor correction in Seville, Spain with a capacitor bank installed next to the main switchboard generates that reactive energy inside your installation so you do not draw it from the grid, and the surcharge disappears.

Power factor compensation is regulated in ITC-BT-43 of the Spanish Low Voltage Electrotechnical Regulation (REBT), and billing for reactive energy in access tariffs stems from Royal Decree 1164/2001.

Who usually gets reactive energy charges

  • Warehouses and workshops with motors, compressors and machinery.
  • Food industry and refrigeration: cold rooms, blast chillers, pumps.
  • Hotels and care homes with air conditioning, lifts and pumps.
  • Shops and supermarkets with a lot of refrigeration equipment.
  • Large residential communities with pressure pumps, lifts and garages with ventilation.

We see it often on the industrial estates around the city, in Alcalá de Guadaíra, Dos Hermanas, Mairena del Aljarafe, La Rinconada or Utrera, and in the industrial areas in the north and east of Seville.

Power quality analysers and supply quality

Before sizing a bank, we measure. We leave a recording analyser in the main switchboard for several days and obtain the real reactive energy, harmonics, phase imbalance, micro-cuts and surges, with a report to the UNE-EN 50160 standard. That study, 250 to 600 euros plus 21 % VAT (302.50 to 726 euros in total) as a guide, is also useful for other things: spotting an overloaded phase, explaining trips with no apparent cause or gathering data for a supply quality claim against the distributor, which is governed by Royal Decree 1955/2000.

How we solve it

  1. We review your bills to see how much you pay for reactive energy and in which periods.
  2. We measure with the analyser for several days of normal activity.
  3. We size the bank in kVAr: fixed for a specific piece of equipment or automatic with steps for variable loads, with filters if there are harmonics.
  4. We install the cabinet next to the main switchboard, with its protections and controller.
  5. We check on the following bills that the penalty has gone.

If the main cause is old motors or motors without control, we combine it with motors and variable speed drives. And if you want a complete picture of your consumption, start with an energy audit.

Frequently asked questions

What is reactive energy and why am I charged for it?

It is the energy that motors, compressors, transformers and similar equipment draw from the grid to create their magnetic fields and then return without turning it into useful work. It flows through the cables and loads the grid, which is why business tariffs in Spain add a surcharge when it exceeds the permitted level. On the bill it appears as the reactive energy charge (energía reactiva).

How much does a capacitor bank cost in Seville, Spain?

As a guide, 1,500 to 6,000 euros plus 21 % VAT (1,815 to 7,260 euros in total), depending on the kVAr needed and whether the bank is fixed or automatic with steps. Before installing it, it is worth measuring with a power quality analyser, 250 to 600 euros plus VAT, to size it properly and check whether harmonics call for a bank with filters.

How long does it take to pay for itself?

It depends on how much you pay each month for reactive energy. If the surcharge is steady, simply compare the cost of the bank with what you pay a year for that item. With your bills from recent months we do that calculation before you decide, so you can see whether it pays off.

Fixed or automatic capacitor bank?

A fixed bank compensates a specific piece of equipment that always runs the same way, such as a large motor or a transformer. An automatic bank, with several steps that switch in and out according to demand, is the usual choice when the load changes during the day, as in a warehouse with several machines or a hotel. We choose it from the measurements.

What is a power quality analyser?

A device left connected for several days in the main switchboard that records voltages, currents, reactive energy, harmonics, phase imbalance, micro-cuts and surges. With its data we size the bank and detect other problems in the installation. The report follows the UNE-EN 50160 standard on supply quality.

Does a capacitor bank need maintenance?

It should be checked periodically: capacitors lose capacity with age and heat, and contactors and fuses wear out. A bank that no longer compensates lets the penalty come back without anyone noticing. We include it in the electrical maintenance of the warehouse or premises.
