Facade lighting in Seville, Spain: what you can achieve

A well-lit facade changes the look of a house, a hotel or a shop as soon as the sun goes down. Facade lighting in Seville also has a demanding audience: narrow streets, whitewashed walls, wrought-iron grilles, cornices and patios that deserve to be seen at night without dazzling the neighbour opposite. We work with several techniques:

  • Grazing light: floodlights tight against the base of the wall that send light upwards and bring out the texture of brick or stone.
  • Wall washing: even light over the whole facade, ideal for white walls.
  • Accents: doors, coats of arms, balconies, columns and cornices picked out with narrow beams.
  • Shop windows and signs with controlled light that attracts without glare.
  • RGB colour for shops, hotels and special dates.

Typical facades in Seville

  • Stately houses and buildings in the historic centre (Casco Antiguo). Facades with carved doorways, grilles and balconies where the light must highlight the detail and stay discreet by day. Here we take great care that the floodlight is not visible and that no cable runs across the facade.
  • Houses in Triana and Los Remedios. Whitewashed or brick facades, often with decorative tiles, that look best under warm grazing light.
  • Villas in the Aljarafe, such as in Tomares or Mairena del Aljarafe. Facade, porch and garden work as a whole, so we light them together.
  • The historic centre of Carmona and boutique hotels. Lighting that shows off the building and respects its surroundings.
  • Shops. Facade and window work together with the retail and office lighting inside.

Regulations and light pollution

The electrical side complies with ITC-BT-09 of the Spanish Low Voltage Electrotechnical Regulation (REBT), on outdoor lighting: its own circuit, RCD protection, earthing (grounding in the US) and cable in conduit. Andalusia also has its own regulation against light pollution, Decree 357/2010, which applies together with municipal bylaws. The idea is simple: light the facade, not the sky or the windows opposite. A well-designed facade meets both rules and, as a bonus, uses less electricity.

Control and efficiency

Everything we install is LED, with the right driver and a colour temperature chosen for the material: warm for whitewash, albero and wood; slightly more neutral for stone or modern facades. Switching is handled by a photocell or an astronomical time switch, with programmed switch-off and, if you like, control from your phone.

For the Christmas season, many shops and communities add temporary lighting on top of the fixed scheme: see Christmas and event lighting.

How we work

  1. We visit the facade at dusk to see the real street light and the points of interest.
  2. We propose a layout of floodlights, power and control. For large buildings we back it up with a full lighting design study.
  3. Fixed quote in writing.
  4. Installation with discreet conduit and weatherproof boxes.
  5. Final adjustment at night: aiming each floodlight and programming the switching.

Frequently asked questions

What rules apply to lighting a facade in Spain?

The installation follows ITC-BT-09 of the Spanish Low Voltage Electrotechnical Regulation, the one for outdoor lighting, with its protections and earthing. In Andalusia, Decree 357/2010 on light pollution also applies: light must go where it is needed and not up into the sky. We take it into account when choosing and aiming each floodlight.

How much does it cost to light a facade?

It depends on the length, the height, the type of floodlights and the control, which is why it is quoted per project. As a guide, a simple outdoor light point costs 50 to 120 euros plus 21 % VAT (60.50 to 145.20 euros in total) installed; a facade of several storeys with grazing light and zone control costs considerably more. We give you a fixed price after seeing the building at night.

Warm white or coloured light?

On most Seville facades, whitewash, albero yellow or brick, warm light brings out the material without distorting it. RGB floodlights that change colour make sense for shops, hotels or special dates. We can combine both: fixed warm light all year round and colour for particular moments.

How is the switching programmed?

With a photocell (dusk sensor) that switches on at nightfall, or with an astronomical time switch that calculates the sunset time every day. The facade switches on by itself, goes off at the time you choose and uses no power in the early hours. It can also be controlled from your phone.

What protection rating do outdoor floodlights need?

Because they face sun, rain and dust, we use fittings rated IP65 or higher, and IP68 for buried lights or places where water can collect. Connections go in weatherproof boxes and the circuit has its own RCD, so a leak does not leave the rest of the building without power.

Do I need permission to light the facade of my house?

On the electrical side, what matters is a compliant ITC-BT-09 installation. Municipal bylaws (ordenanzas) also apply alongside the Andalusian light pollution decree, and in a block of flats the facade is a common element of the community of owners (comunidad), so agree it with them first. In the historic centre we design discreet lighting with no cables on show.
