Emergency lighting installation for shops, offices and garages in Seville, Spain: lights and exit signs
We carry out emergency lighting installation in Seville, Spain for shops, offices, garages and communities of owners: self-contained lights that switch on when the mains fails and illuminated exit signs, with the levels required by ITC-BT-28 and the Spanish Building Code, and with the paperwork an inspector will ask for.

What emergency lighting is and what it is for
Emergency lighting is made up of self-contained lights, each with its own battery, that switch on by themselves when the mains supply fails. Their job is to let people leave a shop or a garage safely if the power goes: they light the escape routes, mark the exits and keep the electrical boards and fire extinguishers visible.
It is neither decorative nor optional: any inspector, council technician or insurer checks it on the first visit. If you are setting up a business in Spain for the first time, expect emergency lighting installation to be part of getting your premises approved.
Where emergency lighting is compulsory
- Premises open to the public (locales de pública concurrencia): shops, bars, restaurants, offices with customer service, academies, clinics, gyms and hotels (ITC-BT-28 of the Spanish Low Voltage Electrical Regulations).
- Garages and car parks, including communal ones, where the routes to the pedestrian exits must also be signed.
- Common areas of buildings that form part of the escape routes.
- Warehouses and workplaces, on routes and exits as set out in the Building Code.
What we install
- Self-contained emergency lights, surface or recessed, preferably LED.
- Escape signage: exit, emergency exit and direction arrows, illuminated or photoluminescent.
- Lights for garages with the right protection rating and impact resistance.
- Emergency lighting next to electrical boards and fire-fighting equipment.
- Self-test systems, which check the battery automatically and flag any fault.
Regulations we apply
- ITC-BT-28, section 3: emergency lighting in premises open to the public.
- CTE DB-SUA 4: lighting levels and position of the lights on escape routes.
- UNE-EN 1838:2025: lighting applications of emergency lighting.
- UNE-EN 60598-2-22: requirements for the emergency lights themselves.
- RIPCI (Royal Decree 513/2017): maintenance and annual certification of emergency lighting and detection systems.
- ITC-BT-29 in garages with a risk of fire or explosion.
Inspection and maintenance
Emergency light batteries have a limited life, and in Seville, where shops and garages get very hot in summer, they degrade sooner. A lit charging indicator does not guarantee the battery will last when the power is cut. That is why you should:
- Test them regularly, cutting the supply to the circuit and checking they switch on and last.
- Carry out and certify the maintenance as the RIPCI requires.
- Replace batteries or lights that fail the test.
Premises open to the public also have a periodic OCA inspection every 5 years, as do garages with more than 25 spaces and forced ventilation. Emergency lighting is one of the first things checked, and we leave everything documented. If you need the certificate, we issue it as part of our certificates and reports services, and fire alarms are covered in fire detection.
How we carry out an emergency lighting installation
- We visit the premises or garage and check routes, exits, boards and fire-fighting equipment.
- We calculate the number and position of the lights according to the standard.
- We install lights and signage at times that do not interrupt your business.
- We test everything with the mains cut off and measure the duration.
- We hand you the documentation for the licence, the inspection or the insurer.

Shops, communities and garages in Seville
In shops in the city centre and the historic quarter, in Triana and in Nervión, emergency lighting usually comes up when the premises are adapted for the opening licence or at the periodic inspection: we handle it within our services for shops and offices, business opening licences and business and industry. In communities of owners, the critical point is the communal garage, with old lights that no longer charge. If you want to renew the normal lighting at the same time, see the LED upgrade. Frequently asked questions
Is emergency lighting compulsory in my premises?
Yes in premises open to the public (shops, bars, restaurants, offices that receive customers, academies or clinics), in garages and in common areas that form part of an escape route. It is required by ITC-BT-28 of the Low Voltage Regulations and by the safety in use section of the Spanish Building Code (DB-SUA 4).
How many emergency lights do I need?
It depends on the floor area, the occupancy and the escape routes. As a minimum, above every exit door, at changes of direction and level, next to the electrical boards and next to fire extinguishers. We calculate it with the lighting levels set by the standard.
How often do emergency lights have to be checked?
They should be tested regularly and maintained at the intervals set by the Spanish fire protection regulations (RIPCI), which require the maintenance to be certified. In addition, premises open to the public have an inspection by an authorised inspection body (OCA) every 5 years.
Why does my emergency light not come on when the power goes off?
The most common reason is a battery exhausted by age, or a light that is wrongly connected and not charging. Batteries have a limited life and degrade faster in hot premises. The battery is replaced, or the whole light is swapped for an LED one.
Are LED emergency lights better?
They use less power, run cooler and their light source lasts much longer than old fluorescent models, so maintenance is reduced to the battery. In a renovation it is worth moving all the emergency lighting to LED, ideally with self-test units that flag a failing battery.
How much does it cost to install an emergency light?
Roughly 40 to 90 euros plus 21 % VAT per light fitted, depending on the model and whether a new line is needed. The annual maintenance certificate for emergency lighting and fire detection costs 80 to 250 euros plus VAT per premises.
I am opening a bar or shop in Seville. When will emergency lighting be checked?
Usually when the premises are adapted for the opening licence, at the periodic OCA inspection and on the first visit from your insurer or a council technician. If you are taking over existing premises, check that the lights still work on a power cut before signing: old batteries are a very common defect.
