Farm electrician in Seville: pumping, farm buildings and the countryside

In the countryside, electricity moves the water, runs the cold stores and powers the machinery, and it is usually far from everything: pump houses hundreds of metres from the meter, farm buildings extended in stages and farmhouses with installations that are decades old. As a farm electrician in Seville, Spain, we carry out electrical installations for agricultural estates and livestock farms, from the panel of a single pump to the full electrification of a farm building or a solar pumping system.

What we do on farms and estates

  • Well and irrigation pumping: panels with dry-run protection, timers, level probes and pump alternation.
  • Drives and starters for large pumps, which prevent water hammer and adjust the flow. More in motors and variable speed drives.
  • Agricultural buildings and stores: boards, power sockets, lighting and cold rooms.
  • Livestock buildings: lighting, ventilation, drinkers and sockets, with protection against damp.
  • Electric fencing and power for the estate’s gates.
  • Lines to pump houses and sub-boards far from the meter, with the cable size calculated so voltage is not lost.
  • Solar to pump water or to live off the grid, with or without batteries.

Pumping and irrigation: what we are asked for most

The pump is the critical piece of equipment on almost any irrigated farm, and it tends to fail in July, when it is needed most. A good pump panel includes:

  1. Dry-run protection, so the pump does not burn out if the water level in the well drops.
  2. Thermal and phase-loss protection for the motor.
  3. Timer or control logic by timetable, by irrigation sector or by tank level.
  4. Soft start or a drive on pumps of a certain power.
  5. Weatherproof enclosure with the right protection rating and a lock.

For garden irrigation at the house or on small plots, see also irrigation and well pumps.

Solar in the countryside

In the Seville campiña, sunshine and irrigation coincide, which makes solar pumping very cost-effective. We offer three options:

  • Direct solar pumping, with a drive that feeds the pump from the panels during the hours of sunshine.
  • Grid-connected self-consumption (autoconsumo) on farms and buildings with a supply, to cut the bill for pumps and refrigeration. See solar for businesses.
  • Off-grid installation with batteries for pump houses and country houses with no grid nearby, as we explain in off-grid solar.

Regulations

  • ITC-BT-30: damp and wet premises, which applies to livestock buildings, pump houses and stores that are washed down.
  • ITC-BT-47: motor installations, such as those of pumps and fans.
  • ITC-BT-40: low-voltage generating installations, such as the farm’s solar system.
  • ITC-BT-04: whether the installation needs a project or a technical design report is enough.

Farms without papers and switching to three-phase

Many country houses and farm buildings have been extended without a project and never had a boletín (the electrical installation certificate). When you want to connect the supply, change the account holder, sell or ask for more power, they have to be upgraded and the installation legalised. And if the pump or the new machinery is three-phase and the farm is not, the supply has to be changed from single-phase to three-phase.

Farms in the vega and the campiña around Seville

We work in the farming areas that surround the city: the vega of La Rinconada and the Vega del Guadalquivir, with a lot of irrigated land and well pumps; the campiña of Utrera and the vega of Carmona, with cortijos (traditional Andalusian farmhouses), farm buildings and large estates; Los Alcores, with smallholdings and country houses; the Bajo Guadalquivir, with stores, greenhouses and packing sheds; and the southern Aljarafe towards the marshes. The work changes from one area to the next, but the aim is the same: water and refrigeration that do not stop in the middle of the season.

How we work

  1. Visit to the farm to see the well, the meter, the pump houses and the machinery.
  2. Study of power and distances, and a proposal for boards, lines and, if it makes sense, solar.
  3. Fixed quote item by item.
  4. Installation, planned outside critical irrigation periods whenever possible.
  5. Commissioning of pumps and equipment, with earthing and insulation measurements.
  6. Legalisation and dealings with the distributor if needed.

Frequently asked questions

How much does the electrical panel for a well pump cost?

As a guide, 150 to 500 euros plus 21 % VAT, depending on the pump power and what it includes: dry-run protection, timer, soft start or alternation between two pumps. Large pumping systems with a drive or solar power are studied to measure after seeing the well and the irrigation installation.

I have bought a cortijo or country house with no boletín. Can the electrics be legalised?

Yes. We inspect the installation, measure earthing, insulation and protection devices, upgrade what does not comply and file the installation certificate (boletín) with its technical design report or project with the Junta de Andalucía. It is common in country houses and farm buildings extended over the years without documents, and it is essential to have the supply in your name.

Can I pump water with solar panels?

Yes, and it suits Seville very well, because irrigation coincides with the sunniest hours. Solar pumping can be direct, with a drive that feeds the pump from the panels, or combined with the grid or with batteries. We size it from the depth of the well, the flow rate and the irrigation hours.

Does my pump need a three-phase supply?

It depends on its power. Small pumps run on single-phase, but irrigation pumps of a certain size are usually three-phase. If your supply is single-phase, it can be changed to three-phase with its boletín and the paperwork with the distributor, or the pump can be fed through a suitable drive if its power allows.

What protection do the electrics of a livestock building need?

Livestock buildings are damp and sometimes corrosive environments, so the installation must follow what ITC-BT-30 requires for damp premises: sealed boxes and light fittings, tough conduits, well-graded RCDs and careful earthing. We also plan the supply for ventilation, drinkers and lighting.

Do you work on farms far from Seville?

Yes, across the Seville area and the province, from the Vega del Guadalquivir to the campiña of Utrera and Carmona or the Bajo Guadalquivir. For planned work we group visits, and if your pump stops in the middle of the season we give you the estimated arrival time when you call.

Automatic irrigation and well pumps

We handle the electrical side of automatic irrigation installation in Seville, Spain: a protected supply for the controller, wiring for the solenoid valves, rain sensors and phone control, and the well pump control panel with dry-run protection so the pump does not burn out when the water level drops. For villas, townhouses and plots in the Aljarafe and the surrounding countryside.

Solar for businesses

We install commercial solar panels in Seville, Spain: self-consumption systems of 15 to 100 kW or more on warehouse roofs, solar carports in car parks and solar pumping on farms, with an engineering project, legalisation under Royal Decree 244/2019 and a study that matches your consumption curve against real production.

Off-grid solar and solar kits

We install off-grid solar systems in the province of Seville, Spain when there is no grid connection or bringing one in does not pay off: panels, batteries, charge controller and inverter for country houses, plots, farm buildings, wells and caravans, sized for what you will connect and with backup for cloudy days.

Motors and drives

Variable speed drive installation in Seville, Spain, starter replacement and proper motor protection: we work in warehouses, pumping stations, residential booster pump sets and machinery, fitting drives, soft starters, contactors, motor protection breakers and thermal overload relays, with programming and commissioning.

Single to three-phase

A single-phase to three-phase upgrade in Seville, Spain is what you need when your home or business is going to have very large loads: an 11 kW EV charger, certain aerothermal heat pumps or machinery. We adapt the riser cable, fit a three-phase fuse board, share the circuits between the phases and handle the boletín with the distributor.

Legalising an installation

Legalising an electrical installation in Seville, Spain is how you put in order a home, business premises or villa that never had a boletín (electrical installation certificate) or that falls short of the regulations. We inspect the installation, bring it up to the Spanish wiring regulations, write the technical design report and register the certificate with the Junta de Andalucía.
