Electric underfloor heating in Seville, Spain: warmth without radiators

Electric underfloor heating is a very thin heating mat or cable laid under the floor that warms the room from below. There are no radiators on the wall and no boiler, and the heat spreads evenly. In Seville, where winter is short, we mostly install it in bathrooms and in specific rooms during a renovation, which is where cost, consumption and comfort balance best.

What it includes

  • Room survey: usable area (without fixed furniture, bath or shower tray) and the power needed.
  • Heating mat or cable adapted to the shape of the room, with its power per square metre.
  • Floor sensor and thermostat, to control the floor temperature and programme timetables.
  • Dedicated circuit from the fuse box with its breaker and RCD protection.
  • Measurements of resistance and insulation before, during and after tiling.
  • Coordination with the tiler so the mat is well protected when the floor is laid.

Where we install it

  • Bathrooms in renovations. The most common job: in flat renovations in Los Remedios, Nervión or Heliópolis, clients take advantage of the new bathroom floor to add the mat. We coordinate it with the bathroom electrics.
  • Bedrooms and living rooms in full renovations. When the whole floor is replaced, an entire room can be heated without radiators. If you are renovating an older flat completely, see rewiring old apartments.
  • Villas and townhouses. In Tomares, Mairena del Aljarafe or Bormujos, for upstairs bathrooms or ground-floor rooms with cold floors.

If what you want is to heat several rooms without changing the floor, electric heating with panel heaters will suit you better.

How we work

  1. We look at the room and the stage of the work, and measure the usable area.
  2. We check the power available in your home and the circuit that will be needed.
  3. We give you a fixed price for the square metres, the thermostat and the circuit.
  4. We lay the mat and the sensor on the prepared base and measure the resistance.
  5. We measure again once the floor is laid, connect the thermostat and leave it programmed.

The thermostat can be controlled from your phone or together with the rest of the heating and cooling if you choose a smart model.

Regulations

Electric underfloor heating is fed by a dedicated circuit sized under ITC-BT-25 of the Spanish Low Voltage Electrotechnical Regulation, protected by a 30 mA RCD, and heating cables and mats comply with the UNE-EN 60335-2-96 standard. If the power of the mat means reviewing your contract, we explain how to increase your contracted power. The rest of our solutions are under air conditioning and appliances.

Frequently asked questions

How much does electric underfloor heating cost per square metre?

As an estimate, 40 to 90 euros per square metre installed plus 21 % VAT, with the heating mat or cable and the floor thermostat. It does not include the floor covering or the circuit from the fuse box, which depends on the distance. In a bathroom of a few square metres the total cost is modest; in large rooms it is worth comparing with other options.

Can electric underfloor heating go in without lifting the floor?

There are very thin mats that are laid over the existing floor in the adhesive of the new floor covering, for example when tiles or porcelain are laid on top. What is always needed is a new finish over the mat. That is why it is usually done as part of a bathroom or room renovation.

Is electric underfloor heating good for the bathroom?

It is where it makes most sense: a small area, use concentrated in the morning and evening, and the comfort of stepping onto a warm floor out of the shower. With a programmable thermostat it switches on before you get up and off by itself. In the bathroom it is protected by its RCD and the protection zones are respected.

Does electric underfloor heating use a lot of electricity?

It depends on the area, the power of the mat and the hours it runs. In a bathroom programmed for the hours of use, consumption is moderate; to heat a whole home for many hours a day, a heat pump or aerotermia (air-to-water heat pump) uses less energy. We do the sums for your case before you decide.

What happens if the mat gets damaged under the floor?

That is why we measure the resistance and insulation of the mat before, during and after the floor is laid, and record the values. That way any damage during the work is detected while it can still be corrected. A well-laid mat protected by the floor covering has no parts that wear out.

Will the heating mat be a problem for my contracted power?

In a bathroom the mat usually fits comfortably within a normal Spanish contract. In larger rooms, or if it coincides with the oven and the water heater, we check your potencia contratada (the maximum kW you can draw at once) before installing, and tell you whether you need to programme it or increase the power.
