PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, híbrido enchufable)
Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle: a hybrid car with a combustion engine and a rechargeable battery, usually 10 to 25 kWh, that covers short trips in electric mode and charges from a socket or a wallbox.
What a PHEV is
A PHEV, Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle, combines a petrol (gas) or diesel engine with an electric motor and a battery you recharge by plugging the car in. With the battery charged you can do your daily trips in electric mode and, when it runs out, the car carries on as a hybrid.
PHEV compared with other cars
- Against a conventional hybrid: a PHEV plugs in and has a much bigger battery.
- Against a BEV: a BEV is 100 % electric with far larger batteries; a PHEV keeps the combustion engine for long trips.
PHEVs with an electric range of 40 km or more carry the DGT 0 label; the rest, the ECO label.
Battery and charging
A PHEV battery is usually 10 to 25 kWh, so it does not need much power:
- On a Schuko socket with the car’s cable, at about 2.3 kW, it charges in several hours.
- With a reinforced socket or a wallbox at 3.7 kW, in a few hours.
- Many PHEVs accept no more than 3.7 kW on AC, so a more powerful wallbox will not charge them faster, though it will serve a future car.
The key: charge it every day
A PHEV only really saves money if it is plugged in daily. If not, it carries the weight of the battery and uses more fuel than a normal hybrid. With a home charger and an off-peak tariff, most town trips run on cheap electricity.
