FAQ
Which EV charger power should I choose: 3.7, 7.4, 11 or 22 kW?
In a single-phase Spanish home, the standard charger is 7.4 kW: it adds 40 to 45 km of range per hour and takes a 60 kWh battery from 20 to 80 % in about 5 hours. A 3.7 kW unit is enough for a plug-in hybrid, and 11 or 22 kW only makes sense with a three-phase supply.
The options side by side
| Power | Current and phases | Range added per hour (approx.) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2.3 kW | 10 A single-phase (ordinary socket) | 10 to 13 km | Emergencies |
| 3.7 kW | 16 A single-phase | about 20 km | Plug-in hybrids, second homes, low contracted power |
| 7.4 kW | 32 A single-phase | 40 to 45 km | The home standard |
| 11 kW | 16 A three-phase | about 60 km | Homes and businesses with three-phase |
| 22 kW | 32 A three-phase | about 120 km | Businesses, hotels, fleets |
The range figures assume an average consumption of 17 kWh per 100 km.
Why 7.4 kW is the standard
Almost all homes in Seville have a single-phase (monofásico) supply, and on single-phase the sensible maximum is 7.4 kW. At that power a 60 kWh battery goes from 20 to 80 % in about 5 hours, comfortably within the cheap overnight period. For most drivers’ daily use it is more than enough.
When 3.7 kW is enough
Plug-in hybrids have 10 to 20 kWh batteries and charge fully overnight at 3.7 kW. It also suits holiday homes or a low contracted power you do not want to raise.
When 11 or 22 kW makes sense
Only with a three-phase (trifásico) supply. And there is a detail many people miss: on AC, the charging speed is limited by the charger built into the car. Many cars accept 11 kW on AC, but few charge at 22 kW. A 22 kW unit is useful in businesses or communities because it can share power between two vehicles.
And your contracted power
A 7.4 kW charger with 4.6 kW of potencia contratada (contracted power) needs dynamic load balancing or a higher off-peak power.
Other details
- Type 2 connector: the European AC standard, and the one any wallbox installed in Spain should have.
- Tethered or socket: at home a fixed cable is more convenient; in communities and businesses, a socket lets each user bring their own.
- Smart functions: scheduling, balancing, charging from solar surplus and app control.
