ITC-BT-52 (Spanish EV charging installations regulation)

Complementary technical instruction of the REBT, approved by Royal Decree 1053/2014, that governs electric vehicle charging installations: connection schemes, protective devices, dedicated circuit and load planning.

What ITC-BT-52 covers

Approved by Royal Decree 1053/2014, it has been in force since 30 June 2015 and was last amended by Royal Decree 450/2022. It applies to any charging installation, individual or shared, public or private. Inductive charging is excluded.

The four schemes

  • Scheme 1: shared or trunk installation with a main meter and branches to each space.
  • Scheme 2: individual, with the line from the home’s own meter. The most common in communal garages.
  • Scheme 3: individual, with its own meter for the space.
  • Scheme 4: dedicated circuit from the home’s fuse board (4a) or the car park’s (4b). Compulsory in new detached houses, with circuit C13.

Compulsory protection

  • A 30 mA RCD per charging point, class A at least. The technical guide recommends covering DC leaks with a type B or a type A plus a 6 mA detector (RDC-DD).
  • A curve C, all-pole MCB.
  • Protection against transient and temporary overvoltages.
  • TN-S earthing system and protective conductor.
  • A dedicated charging circuit.

Cables and documentation

Minimum cross-section 2.5 mm² and maximum voltage drop of 5 % to the charging point. In shared installations with a load manager a simultaneity factor of 0.3 applies. Every installation needs a certificate (CIE) and technical report; above 50 kW it needs a project and an initial OCA inspection.

At home it means a dedicated line with its protection; in a communal garage, also choosing the scheme and notifying the comunidad. See EV charger installation in Seville, Spain.
