Dynamic load balancing (balanceo dinámico de carga)

A system that adjusts the EV charger power in real time to what the rest of the home or building is using, so you never exceed your contracted power or trip the ICP.

Dynamic load balancing (balanceo dinámico)

What dynamic load balancing is

Dynamic load balancing (balanceo dinámico) is what lets you charge the car without blacking out the house. A meter, usually a current clamp or a Modbus meter in the board or on the individual riser cable, tells the charger how much the home is using at every moment. The charger raises or lowers its current in real time so the total never exceeds your potencia contratada (contracted power).

An example with 4.6 kW contracted

With 4.6 kW contracted you cannot simply charge at 7.4 kW: the ICP would trip as soon as the oven went on. With balancing, at night the car charges with whatever power is spare, and if you run the washing machine the charger drops for a while and recovers afterwards. It is the alternative to raising your power, which costs about 30 euros per kW per year.

Chargers that include it

Many chargers offer it with an extra meter: Power Boost on Wallbox, the dynamic meter of the V2C Trydan, Circutor eHome Link or the Tesla Wall Connector with its meter. The module usually costs 150 to 400 euros plus installation, as a rough estimate.

Balancing and power sharing

Balancing watches the consumption of the home or building. Power sharing splits power among several chargers. In garages with a shared installation (scheme 1) both are combined in a load management system, and ITC-BT-52 then allows the line to be sized with a simultaneity factor of 0.3.

Do you need it

You need it if your contracted power is less than 7.4 kW plus your home’s demand, which is nearly always. See dynamic load balancing and home EV charger for a house in Seville, Spain.
