FAQ

Do I need to increase my contracted power (potencia) for an EV charger in Spain?

Not always. With dynamic load balancing, the charger only uses the power your home is not using, so the power limiter does not trip. If you want to charge at 7.4 kW at any time with 4.6 kW contracted, it is enough to raise only the off-peak (valle) power on the 2.0TD tariff.

The problem

In Spain you pay for a potencia contratada (contracted power, in kW): the most you can draw at once. If you go over it, the ICP (power limiter, now usually built into the smart meter) cuts the whole home. A single-phase wallbox charges at 7.4 kW. With 4.6 kW contracted it is impossible to charge at that rate without tripping the limiter, and the house keeps using power too: fridge, air conditioning, oven. There are three ways to solve it, and increasing the power is not always the best.

Three options

1. Dynamic load balancing

A meter or clamp in your fuse board tells the charger how much the home is using at each moment, and the charger adjusts so you never exceed your contracted power. Switch on the oven and the car charges more slowly; switch it off and it speeds up again. Almost every brand offers it: Power Boost on Wallbox, the dynamic meter of the V2C Trydan, eHome Link on Circutor or the meter of the Tesla Wall Connector. The module costs an estimated 150 to 400 euros plus installation.

2. Raise only the off-peak power

The 2.0TD tariff, the standard one for Spanish homes, lets you contract two powers: one for peak hours (P1) and one for off-peak, the valle period at night (P2). Many owners keep their daytime power and raise only the night one to charge at 7.4 kW. Each kW costs about 30 euros a year, so raising just one period is cheaper.

3. Raise the power in every period

This makes sense if you are also short of power during the day. Check first whether your installation allows it without a new boletín (electrical certificate).

In a communal garage

If the line comes from your own meter (layout 2 of ITC-BT-52), the limiter is in your home or at your meter, far from the space. The technical guide recommends installing the charger with balancing so it does not trip and leave you going upstairs to reset it.

Before buying the charger, we check your power, consumption and boletín. In Seville, Spain, see dynamic load balancing and, if needed, increase contracted power.
