C13 circuit (circuito C13, dedicated EV charging circuit)

The dedicated circuit for an electric car charging point that ITC-BT-25 added to the wiring of Spanish homes. It starts at the main board, feeds no other load and has its own protective devices.

What the C13 circuit is

C13 is the dedicated EV charging line inside a home. Royal Decree 1053/2014 amended ITC-BT-25 to add it to the list of home circuits, which used to run from C1 (lighting) to C12. It matches scheme 4 of ITC-BT-52: in a new detached house with a garage, the regulations require scheme 4a, with this circuit leaving the main board.

What a C13 circuit includes

  • Exclusive use: it feeds only the charger, with no sockets or other loads.
  • Curve C MCB, sized to the power and cable; for example 32 A with 6 mm² or 40 A with 10 mm² for 7.4 kW, depending on length and installation method.
  • 30 mA RCD, type A with 6 mA DC detection (or RDC-DD in the charger) or type B.
  • Surge protection.
  • Enough cable size: voltage drop is limited to 5 %. For 7.4 kW, 6 mm² up to about 15 m, 10 mm² up to 30 m and 16 mm² up to 50 m as a guide.

When it affects you

  • New home: the C13 should already be there. Check the board when you get the keys.
  • Existing house with a garage or carport: it has to be added. Sometimes it fits in the current board; sometimes the board is better extended or replaced.
  • Contracted power: the charger adds to the home’s demand, so it usually goes with dynamic load balancing or more off-peak power.

Who does it

A proper C13 includes cable sizing, the right protection and a boletín. We fit it with a home EV charger for a house in Seville, Spain, and if your board has no room we deal with it through fuse board replacement.
