FAQ

Can I charge my electric car with solar panels in Spain?

Yes, if you install a compatible charger that reads your production and charges only with surplus, or with surplus plus a minimum from the grid. In Seville, Spain, about 2 kWp of extra panels covers almost all the consumption of a car doing 15,000 km a year, as long as you charge by day.

Charging an electric car with solar panels: how it works

Charging your car with solar panels is one of the most cost-effective combinations in a detached house, and even more so in Seville, Spain: the area gets about 3,000 hours of sunshine a year and each kWp installed produces, as a guide, 1,600 to 1,750 kWh a year.

The system works like this: a meter tells the charger how much energy the panels are producing and how much the house is using, and the charger adjusts its power to use what is left over.

Solar charging modes

  • Surplus only: the car charges only with energy the house is not using. The cost is almost zero, but charging depends on the sun.
  • Surplus plus a minimum: it always charges with a minimum of 6 A (about 1.4 kW), the minimum the charging standard requires, and tops it up with whatever the panels have spare.
  • Normal: it charges at the power you choose and takes what is missing from the grid. Useful at night, in the off-peak period.

How many panels you need

A car doing 15,000 km a year uses 2,400 to 2,550 kWh. With the solar production of Seville, Spain, about 2 kWp of extra panels covers almost all of that, as long as the car is at home and plugged in during the sunny hours. If you work away and charge at night, a home battery or the off-peak tariff completes the system.

Which chargers can do it

Several manufacturers make units with surplus management, such as the Wallbox Eco-Smart, the V2C Trydan or the Circutor eHome, and there are chargers that integrate with inverters from other brands. What matters is that the charger is compatible with the meter or the inverter you already have.

Tax advantages

Installing the charger can qualify for the 15 % IRPF income tax deduction, with a maximum saving of 600 euros, if it is completed before 31 December 2026 in a property you own.

When to call an electrician

Call if you already have panels and are buying the car, or if you are installing both at once. In Seville, Spain, we fit the charger through home EV charger installation for houses and the panels through solar panels.
