CUPS (supply point code, código universal del punto de suministro)

Código Universal de Punto de Suministro: the unique identifier of each electricity supply in Spain, about 20 characters starting with ES. It belongs to the home or premises, not to the person, and appears on every bill.

What the CUPS is

The CUPS, Código Universal de Punto de Suministro, is the number plate of your electricity supply. It is a code of about 20 characters starting with ES, followed by numbers and letters that identify the distributor and the exact supply point. No two are the same in Spain, and almost every form you fill in will ask for it.

Where to find it

  • On any electricity bill, usually in the contract or supply details section.
  • In your contract with your supplier (comercializadora).
  • In the customer area of your local distributor’s website.

If the home is new and has never had power, the CUPS is assigned when the distributor creates the supply point.

It stays with the home, not with you

The CUPS does not change when you switch supplier, account holder or tariff: it belongs to the supply point. If you move, your new home will have a different one. When buying or renting, ask for a recent bill to learn the CUPS, the contracted power and the distributor.

What you will need it for

  • Signing up for electricity or switching supplier.
  • A change of account holder or a power increase.
  • Registering solar self-consumption and surplus compensation.
  • Registering an EV charger with its own meter.
  • Checking your hourly consumption on the distributor’s website.

If you cannot find it

Without bills, for example in an inherited home or one left empty for years, the distributor can trace it from the address. If the installation also needs a boletín to be reconnected, see paperwork management in Seville, Spain.
