How much does it cost to light a garden in Spain?

Garden lighting cost: price per point

What garden lighting costs depends on the design, but the guide reference is 50 to 120 euros per outdoor light point installed. On that basis, a detached house garden with 8 to 10 points would come to 400 to 1,200 euros, plus the trenching and ducting if needed.

Types of garden lighting

• Bollards to mark paths and edges.
• Adjustable spotlights to highlight trees, palms or the facade.
• Wall lights on walls, porches and entrances.
• Pool lighting, with its own safety rules.
• LED strips on steps and built-in benches.

What the rules require

Outdoor lighting is covered by ITC-BT-09 and ITC-BT-30 (damp and wet locations), and pools by ITC-BT-31. In practice:

• Fittings rated IP65 or higher, and IP68 for submerged ones.
• Buried cable in ducting with inspection chambers, as set by ITC-BT-07.
• A dedicated circuit protected by a 30 mA RCD (diferencial).
• Earthing (grounding) of metal fittings.

Solar or wired

Solar bollards are cheap and need no building work, but they give little light and last less. Wired lighting is more reliable and powerful, and lets you switch it all on at once with a timer or a dusk sensor.

How to save

• Plan the points before planting or paving: the trench is much cheaper then.
• Group the lighting into zones with separate switching.
• Use low consumption LED and automatic switching so it is not left on longer than needed.
