What a lighting design costs depends on the size and complexity of the space. As a guide estimate, it runs from 150 to 600 euros: the lower end for a home or a small shop, the upper end for large spaces or ones with many different zones.

What a lighting study includes

• Lighting calculation with software such as Dialux: how many lux reach each area.
• Choice of fittings: type, power, beam angle and colour rendering (CRI).
• Colour temperature suited to each use.
• Layout and circuits: where each point goes and how it is switched.
• Estimated consumption and savings compared with the current lighting.
• Control: dimming, sensors or switching by zones.

When it is worth it

• Shops and shop windows, where light sells.
• Offices, which must meet standard UNE-EN 12464-1 for lighting in workplaces.
• Restaurants and hotels, with different atmospheres depending on the time of day.
• Warehouses and storage units, where a good calculation avoids unnecessary fittings.
• Large homes, or ones with high ceilings, double height spaces or lots of natural light.
• Outdoor areas and facades.

Lumens, lux and watts

A watt measures what a bulb consumes, not how much light it gives. Lumens tell you the light a fitting emits and lux the light that reaches a surface. A lighting design works in lux because that is what the user really perceives on the desk, the counter or the floor.

Regulations taken into account

As well as UNE-EN 12464-1 in workplaces, the Spanish Building Code (CTE) regulates the energy efficiency of lighting in section HE 3, and ITC-BT-28 applies to premises open to the public. A good project settles all of that before the first fitting is bought.
