What LED strips cost to install depends mainly on where they go and how they are powered. As a reference, the installed metre (meter) has a guide price of 15 to 40 euros.

Where they are most often fitted

• Under the wall cabinets in the kitchen, to light the worktop.
• In ceiling recesses or curtain pelmets, as indirect light in the living room.
• On stairs, step by step or along the skirting.
• Around mirrors and in bathrooms.
• In furniture, display cabinets and headboards.

In new build flats (apartments), kitchen and bathroom strips are one of the most common jobs after handover.

What a well done installation includes

• The LED strip, with the LED density and colour temperature you choose.
• Aluminium profile and diffuser, which dissipate heat and hide the individual dots of light.
• A power supply (driver) sized for the length installed.
• Safety extra-low voltage, regulated by ITC-BT-36, for most strips.
• Control: switch, dimmer, sensor or phone control.

What the price depends on

• The quality of the strip: power, colour rendering (CRI) and lifespan.
• The fitting: sticking it under a cabinet is not the same as recessing it into a plaster ceiling recess.
• The power: whether there is a socket or lighting point nearby, or a new one is needed.
• The control: simple on and off, dimmable or colour changing.
• Outdoor or bathroom use, with the right IP rating.

Common mistakes

• Undersized power supplies that overheat and fail early.
• Strips without a profile, which come unstuck and last less.
• Power supplies hidden with no access to replace them.
