FAQ
How much does it cost to install a new lighting point in Spain?
Installing a new lighting point in Spain has a guide price of 30 to 50 euros if a nearby line can be used and only box, switch and cable are needed. If a new line has to be run in a chased wall, the price rises to about 80 to 150 euros, not counting the light fitting or hanging it.
Cost to install a lighting point: price table
What a new lighting point costs depends on where the power has to come from and how much building work is needed. These are the guide prices used in industry price guides:
| Job | Guide price |
|---|---|
| Simple lighting point from a nearby line | 30 to 50 euros |
| New line in a chased wall | 80 to 150 euros |
| Conduit in a chase or surface mounted, per metre (meter) | 15 to 35 euros |
| Hanging and connecting the light fitting | 30 to 50 euros per fitting |
What a lighting point includes
A lighting point (punto de luz) is the outlet on the ceiling or wall where a light is connected, together with the switch that controls it and the cable linking them to the lighting circuit. Depending on how you want to switch it, it can be:
- Single: one switch controls one light.
- Two-way: switched on and off from two places, typical in corridors and bedrooms.
- Intermediate: from three or more places, for long corridors or stairs.
The more complex the switching, the more cable and switches it needs, and the more it costs.
What the price depends on
- Whether there is conduit and a box nearby. Using an existing run saves work and time.
- The type of wall or ceiling. Plasterboard (drywall) and false ceilings let cable through without chasing; brick or plaster has to be opened and made good.
- Whether the circuit can take more load. Lighting has its own circuit (C1 in Spanish regulations). If it is already near its limit, a new line may be better.
- How many points are done at once. Several points in one visit make each one cheaper.
No building work: trunking
If you do not want chasing, the cable can run in surface trunking. It is quicker and cleaner, although it stays visible. In garages, storerooms or terraces it is usually the most practical option, with outdoor rated material where needed.
What to avoid
Do not extend a lighting point by joining cables without a junction box, or take it from a socket with exposed cables. Besides being dangerous, the installation stops complying with Spanish regulations and will cause problems the day you need a boletín (electrical certificate).
