What an electrician by video call can solve

Some electrical problems do not need anyone to come to your home, just someone experienced to tell you what to look at and in what order. An RCD that tripped in the early hours, a breaker that will not go back up, part of the home without power or the doubt about whether the cut is the electricity company’s are often solved in five minutes on a video call.

The electrician by video call guides you from the screen: you point your phone at the fuse board and we check things together. If it is solved, you save a visit. If not, we already know what is happening and what to bring. It is especially handy for newcomers to Spain who have not yet worked out which switch on the Spanish fuse board does what.

What we can solve with you

  • Resetting the RCD and finding the circuit that trips it, switching breakers off and on in order. See RCD keeps tripping.
  • Knowing what has tripped: the RCD, a breaker or the power limiter (ICP), which cuts in when you exceed your contracted power (potencia contratada). See increase your contracted power.
  • Identifying an appliance causing the leakage, by unplugging zone by zone.
  • Checking whether the cut comes from the grid or from your installation.
  • Advising on a fault before you ask for a quote: whether it looks simple or needs checking with instruments.
  • Answering questions about your fuse board, your power or an appliance you want to connect.

What we do not do on a video call

Your safety comes first. On a video call we will never ask you to open a junction box, take a socket apart, touch cables or work on anything live. If the solution involves handling the installation, a professional does it on site. And if there is a burning smell, smoke, sparks or heat in a socket or the fuse board, no video call will do: switch off the main switch and ask for a 24-hour emergency electrician.

How it works

  1. You write to us explaining what is happening and ask for the video call.
  2. We confirm the price, or that it is free if you are already a customer.
  3. Video call with the fuse board in view and good light.
  4. Guided diagnosis: we check step by step.
  5. Result: problem solved, or a proposed visit with the diagnosis well advanced and a written quote.

Typical cases in Seville

The first autumn rains. The RCD trips and will not reset. On the call we see that the problem is in the terrace circuit, so that circuit is left off and the rest of the home works until the outdoor socket is repaired.

Summer with the air conditioning flat out. The power goes off when the oven is switched on with the air conditioning running. The call confirms it is the power limiter due to excess load, not a fault, and you can consider whether to review your contracted power.

Second homes in the Aljarafe. The owner is away and the fridge has lost power. A relative opens the fuse board during the video call, the RCD is reset and the faulty circuit is identified for later repair. More on the area in Aljarafe.

Frequently asked questions

What can be solved on a video call?

Simple problems that are safe to check: resetting an RCD, finding which circuit or appliance trips it, telling whether the RCD, a breaker or the power limiter has tripped, checking whether the whole street is without power and advising whether a fault needs a visit. We will never ask you to open boxes or touch cables.

How much does a video call cost?

As a market estimate, 15 to 30 euros plus 21 % VAT, or free for existing customers. We tell you the price before starting the call. If a visit is needed afterwards, what we saw on the call means we arrive with the diagnosis well advanced and the right materials.

How do I know whether the fault is mine or the electricity company's?

If the whole home is without power and everything on the fuse board is up, check whether the neighbours or the street have power. If nobody does, it is a cut by the distributor, e-distribución in Seville. If only you are affected and the board looks fine, it may be a problem with your supply cable or the meter. We check it with you on the call.

What do I need for the video call?

A phone or tablet with a camera, an internet connection and access to the fuse board in good light. If the power is off, use your mobile data and a torch (flashlight). Keep your electricity bill to hand in case we need to see the contracted power.

My holiday home is empty and the power has tripped. Can someone help remotely?

Often, yes. A neighbour, cleaner or key holder can open the fuse board during the video call while we guide them: they reset the RCD and we identify the circuit that is failing so it can be repaired later. That can save the contents of the fridge and freezer while you are abroad.

What if the video call does not solve it?

Then we propose a visit with a prior quote. The advantage is that we already know what tripped, which circuit has the problem and what materials may be needed, so the repair is usually quicker. If there is a burning smell, smoke or heat, do not wait: switch off the main switch and ask for an emergency call-out.
