Air conditioning trips the electricity? Dedicated circuit and connection in Seville, Spain

If your air conditioning trips the electricity, or you are about to install it in Seville, Spain, the electrician prepares a dedicated circuit from the fuse board to the split unit or the outdoor unit, with its own circuit breaker, so the power does not go off every summer afternoon. We also complete the pre-installation of new-build homes and connect thermostats.

Why air conditioning needs its own circuit

In Seville the air conditioning runs for many hours at a stretch for months on end, and it is one of the most power-hungry appliances in the home. When it is plugged into any old socket, it shares a circuit with the TV, the computer or the iron, and that circuit is not designed to carry such a load for so long. The result is familiar: the breaker trips in the middle of the afternoon, sockets heat up and, in the worst cases, a burning smell and blackened sockets appear.

The solution is an air conditioning installation done by an electrician: a dedicated line from the fuse board, with the right cable cross-section for the unit and its own circuit breaker (MCB). In homes with high electrification, ITC-BT-25 of the Spanish Low Voltage Electrotechnical Regulation provides precisely for a specific circuit for air conditioning, C9.

What the job includes

  • A study of the power of the unit or units and of what you already have at home.
  • A dedicated line from the fuse board to the indoor unit or the outdoor unit, recessed or in trunking depending on the condition of the home.
  • Its own protection in the fuse board, and an RCD arrangement that does not leave the whole home dark if the unit develops a leakage.
  • A direct connection or its own socket next to the unit, wherever the air conditioning installer indicates.
  • Supply to the outdoor unit on a terrace, facade or roof, with material suitable for outdoors.
  • Tests of operation and of the protections tripping.

We coordinate with your air conditioning installer: they fit the unit and the refrigerant side, and we leave the electrics ready and safe.

When the air conditioning trips the power

There are two different causes and it pays not to confuse them:

  1. A breaker in the fuse board trips. The circuit is overloaded because the air conditioning shares a line with other appliances. We explain it in detail on MCB keeps tripping, and the solution is a dedicated line.
  2. The whole home cuts out. You have exceeded your contracted power and the smart meter has cut the supply, explained on power limiter tripping. Here you may need to increase your contracted power, with a boletín when the distributor asks for one, or spread the loads so the air conditioning does not coincide with the oven and the hob.

If the lever with the TEST button drops instead, there is an earth leakage somewhere on the circuit: see RCD keeps tripping.

Older flats and new-build homes in Seville

  • Flats from the 1960s to the 1980s in Nervión, Los Remedios, Triana or La Macarena: few circuits, small fuse boards and units added over the years to shared sockets. Here we usually run a new line in trunking or through an existing conduit, and sometimes the fuse board should be extended (see fuse board replacement).
  • New-build homes in Sevilla Este, Palmas Altas or Dos Hermanas: handed over with ducted air conditioning pre-installation and, in some developments, with the machine included. What we are asked to do is complete that pre-installation, add a split in a bedroom or a line on the penthouse terrace. There is more on what is missing when you move into a new home in our new-build section.
  • Villas and townhouses in Alcalá de Guadaíra, Dos Hermanas or the Aljarafe: several units or a higher-power ducted system, where the contracted power sometimes needs reviewing too.

Control the air conditioning from your phone

A smart thermostat lets you switch the air conditioning on before you get home, set schedules and limit the temperature so consumption does not shoot up. In ducted systems, zoned thermostats avoid cooling empty rooms. We install them and connect them to your home network. If you are also considering a heat pump for heating and hot water, see heat pump electrics.

Frequently asked questions

Does air conditioning need its own circuit in Spain?

It is recommended and, in homes with high electrification, the regulations provide a specific circuit for air conditioning (C9 in ITC-BT-25). A unit plugged into a socket shared with other appliances overloads that circuit and trips the breaker, especially in summer. With its own line and protection, the problem disappears.

My air conditioner causes constant tripping. What can I do?

If a breaker in the fuse board trips, that circuit is overloaded: the air conditioning shares a line with other appliances. If the whole home cuts out from the limiter or the meter, you have exceeded your contracted power (potencia contratada). The first is fixed with a dedicated line; the second by increasing the power or spreading the loads. On the visit we tell you which case is yours.

Can I plug the split unit into an ordinary socket?

Small units can be plugged in, but not into just any socket: it must be in good condition, with no power strip and on a circuit not loaded with other appliances. For a fixed unit used every day, the right solution is a dedicated line with a direct connection or its own socket, which is safer and stops sockets heating up.

How much does the electrical line for air conditioning cost in Seville, Spain?

The pre-installation or dedicated line starts at about 300 euros plus 21 % VAT (363 euros in total), depending on the distance from the fuse board and whether the cable runs in trunking or recessed. Labour is 35 to 45 euros per hour plus VAT. A complete split installation with the unit, including the air conditioning work, costs 800 to 1,200 euros plus VAT.

What is missing from the air conditioning pre-installation of a new flat?

New homes are usually handed over with ducts and the pre-installation done, sometimes with the machine included. What is missing is the unit, the grilles and the thermostat, checking the supply to the outdoor unit and, if you wish, adding a split in a bedroom. We check that the circuit and the fuse board protection match what the unit requires.

Do I have to increase my contracted power to install air conditioning?

It depends on how many units you fit and what coincides with them: oven, induction hob, washing machine or water heater. A single split usually fits within the power of a normal home, but several units running together in August can exceed it. We add up the loads and tell you whether to increase it or simply organise your usage.

Related services

MCB keeps tripping

If your MCB keeps tripping when you switch on the oven, the air conditioning or the washing machine, that circuit is overloaded or has a fault. We check the line, spread the loads or replace the circuit breaker (magnetotérmico) so your kitchen or living room stops losing power.

Power limiter tripping

If your smart meter keeps cutting the power when you switch several things on at once, the ICP power limiter is tripping because you are exceeding your contracted power (potencia contratada). We review your consumption and your installation and tell you whether organising your appliances is enough or whether it is worth increasing the power in Seville, Spain.

Increase contracted power

You need to increase your electricity power in Spain when the smart meter cuts everything off as soon as the air conditioning, the oven and the washing machine run together. We check what power your installation can take, upgrade the supply cable, main switch and fuse board if needed, and issue the boletín so the distributor approves the increase.

Fuse board replacement

A consumer unit replacement in Seville, Spain is the upgrade that adds the most safety without building work: main switch, several RCDs, one breaker per circuit and surge protection. We replace your old fuse box, or a board with a single RCD, with a new fuse board (breaker panel) sized for your power and your circuits.

Smart thermostats

Smart thermostat installation in your home in Seville, Spain lets you control the boiler, air conditioning, heat pump (aerotermia) or underfloor heating from your phone, set schedules and cool the house before you arrive. We check compatibility with your equipment, install it and leave it programmed.

Heat pump electrics

We carry out the heat pump electrical connection in Seville, Spain for aerothermal systems (aerotermia): a dedicated line from the fuse board, its own protections, adapting your contracted power and, if the unit's data sheet requires it, moving to three-phase, with the boletín registered with the Junta de Andalucía. You choose the unit and its heating installer; we leave the electrics ready and safe.
