Public EV charging point (punto de recarga público)

An electric vehicle charging point open to any driver, on the street, in car parks, shopping centres or charging hubs. It is run by an operator and paid for by app, RFID card or bank card. In US English, a public charging station.

What a public charging point is

A public charging point (chargepoint in the UK, charging station in the US) is an EV charger any driver can use, without being a resident or regular customer. They are on the street, in car parks (parking lots), shopping centres, hotels and roadside charging hubs. Behind each one is an operator who installs it, maintains it and bills the energy.

How many there are in Seville

According to the Red Eléctrica map of April 2025, the province of Seville had 722 points, more than 580 of them in the city and its metropolitan area. Electromaps counted 778 stations in the province and 389 in the city in 2026. In 2022 the City Council also awarded a municipal network of 350 double charging posts, 700 points, spread across every district, whose first 56 points went live in April 2024.

Types of point

  • Semi-fast AC, with a Type 2 socket: for leaving the car a couple of hours while you shop or work.
  • Rapid and ultra-rapid DC, with a CCS Combo 2 cable: for charging in a short time.

How you pay

  • With the operator’s app or an app that groups several networks.
  • With an RFID card or key fob.
  • With a bank card: the EU AFIR regulation requires this on new public points of 50 kW or more.

Public or at home

Public charging is essential on trips and for people without their own space, but it costs much more: about 0.45 euros per kWh at a rapid charger, against off-peak home prices of 0.08 to 0.15 euros, as a guide.
