OCPP (Open Charge Point Protocol)

OCPP (Open Charge Point Protocol) is the open protocol linking a charger to its management platform: it authorises users, records consumption, handles payment and shares out power. The most used versions are 1.6 and 2.0.1.

OCPP (Open Charge Point Protocol)

What OCPP is

OCPP (Open Charge Point Protocol) is an open communication protocol, maintained by the Open Charge Alliance, that lets a charger talk to a management platform over the internet. With it, a dashboard shows which charger is in use, who is charging, how many kWh they use and what to bill them.

Versions 1.6 and 2.0.1

  • OCPP 1.6 (in its 1.6J variant) is the most widespread.
  • OCPP 2.0.1 adds more security, smart charging, tariff management and demand response.

For a new installation, the sensible choice is equipment with OCPP 1.6J that can be upgraded to 2.0.1.

Why it matters on a shared charger

  • Freedom of operator. If the charger speaks OCPP, you can change platform without changing hardware. A closed charger ties you to one company.
  • User control. Together with RFID cards, it decides who can charge and records each person’s use.
  • Power sharing. The platform can share power among several chargers.
  • Billing. It lets you charge neighbours, staff or guests per kWh.

A detached house with a single charger does not need it. It is key in communities, hotels, holiday rental buildings, car parks and companies with fleets.

Cost

Management software costs, as a guide, 3 to 10 euros per point per month. The installer does not have to be the operator: we can fit the hardware and you choose the platform you prefer. See public EV charging and OCPP and EV charging for fleets in Seville, Spain.
