High voltage (alta tensión, AT)

Voltages above 1,000 V AC, used to transmit and distribute electricity to the transformer substations. These installations are governed by the Spanish High Voltage Regulations, not by the REBT.

What alta tensión is

Alta tensión (high voltage) is any nominal voltage above 1,000 V AC. It runs along the pylons that cross the countryside and through many underground lines in cities. Transmitting energy at high voltage reduces the current and, with it, the losses in the cables.

High, medium and low voltage

In the trade you will hear:

  • Transmission: the large extra-high voltage lines linking power stations and substations.
  • Medium voltage (media tensión): the everyday name for the high voltage distribution networks that reach neighbourhoods and industrial estates and feed the transformer substations.
  • Low voltage: what leaves those substations at 400/230 V and reaches your meter.

Which regulations apply

High voltage installations are governed by Royal Decree 337/2014 on technical conditions and safety guarantees in high voltage installations, with its ITC-RAT instructions. Only companies authorised for high voltage may build and maintain them, and they need a project and periodic inspections.

When it affects you

  • If you have a warehouse, a factory or a large shop with its own transformer substation, that substation is yours to maintain.
  • If an industrial estate or housing development needs more power, a new medium voltage line and substation may be needed.
  • If you live near a line, never approach fallen cables: call the distributor.

Our part

We work on low voltage and coordinate with companies authorised for high voltage on everything downstream of the transformer: main boards, lines and loads. See medium voltage coordination in Seville, Spain.
