FAQ
How much electricity does an electric car use?
An electric car uses 15 to 20 kWh per 100 kilometres, about 17 on average, plus around 10 % lost while charging. For 15,000 km a year that is 2,400 to 2,550 kWh, about 200 kWh a month: what an average Spanish home uses on electricity. Charging in the off-peak period, it costs 20 to 30 euros a month.
How much electricity an electric car uses per 100 kilometres
An electric car’s consumption is measured in kilowatt hours (kWh) per 100 kilometres, just as a petrol (gas) car is measured in litres. Industry references put it at 15 to 20 kWh per 100 km, with about 17 kWh on average. Add around 10 % that is lost in the charging itself.
Monthly and yearly consumption
For 15,000 kilometres a year:
- Yearly consumption: 2,400 to 2,550 kWh.
- Monthly consumption: about 200 to 210 kWh, what an average home uses on electricity.
- Monthly cost of charging at home: 20 to 30 euros on a tariff with an off-peak (valle) period, and 50 to 60 euros on an ordinary flat rate tariff.
What consumption depends on
- The size and weight of the car. An SUV uses more than a small hatchback.
- Speed. On the motorway (highway) consumption rises; in town, with regenerative braking, it falls.
- Air conditioning. Running it through a summer in Seville, Spain also drains the battery.
- Driving style. Accelerating smoothly and anticipating braking saves energy.
What 100 kilometres costs
| How you charge | Guide cost per 100 km |
|---|---|
| At home, off-peak at about 0.10 euros per kWh | about 1.8 euros |
| At home, at the average PVPC regulated price | about 3.3 euros |
| Public rapid charging | 7 to 11 euros |
| The same distance on petrol | 9 to 11 euros |
What it means for your installation
Charging 200 kWh a month at home is no problem for a well prepared installation, but it requires a dedicated circuit, a suitable charger and, almost always, dynamic load balancing so you do not exceed your contracted power (potencia contratada) while the oven or air conditioning are running. With a 7.4 kW charger, a 60 kWh battery goes from 20 to 80 % in about 5 hours, within the off-peak period.
