Auto-reclosing RCD and selectivity in Seville, Spain: stop the whole house tripping

We fit an auto-reclosing RCD in Seville, Spain: a device that switches the protection back on when it trips because of a passing disturbance, after checking that there is no leak. And we reorganise the fuse board with selectivity so that, when something fails, only the affected circuit trips and not the whole house or business.

Auto-reclosing RCD in Seville: so one trip does not cost you the fridge or the business

The RCD (residual current device, or GFCI in American English) trips when it detects a leak, and that is how it should be. The problem comes when it trips because of a passing disturbance, a distant storm or a spike on the grid, and there is nobody at home or in the shop to switch it back on. Hours later the fridge has warmed up, the cold room has spoilt the stock or the pump has left the house without water.

An auto-reclosing RCD solves that case: an auto-reclosing device checks that the leak has gone and switches the protection back on. And good selectivity prevents the other big headache, a fault on a single circuit switching off the whole house or business.

What an auto-reclosing device does

  1. It detects the trip of the RCD or the circuit breaker.
  2. It waits a few seconds and checks the insulation of the installation.
  3. It recloses if the leak or fault has gone.
  4. It locks out if the fault persists, after a limited number of attempts, so as not to force an installation with a real problem.
  5. It sends an alert, on models that include it, to your mobile or to the home automation system.

When it is worth fitting

  • Second homes and houses left empty for periods, in the Aljarafe, the sierra or on the coast.
  • Homes with a full fridge and freezer, especially in summer.
  • Bars, restaurants and shops with cold rooms, as we explain on our page for bars and restaurants.
  • Well pumps, booster pump sets, servers and equipment that must not stop.
  • Areas with frequent storms, where trips caused by disturbances keep happening.

If the tripping is constant, an auto-recloser is not the answer: there is a leak or an unsuitable RCD. We solve that first with a high-immunity RCD or by repairing the leak, as we explain on RCD keeps tripping.

Selectivity: only what fails should trip

A fuse board with good selectivity works like a chain of staggered protection: when there is a fault, the nearest device trips and the ones upstream hold. To achieve it:

  • We stagger ratings and curves of the circuit breakers (MCBs) between the main switch and each circuit.
  • We stagger sensitivity and time of the RCDs, with a time-delayed (selective) RCD at the head when there are several in cascade.
  • We share the circuits between several RCDs, so a leak on the terrace does not switch off the fridge and the router.
  • We separate what is critical: refrigeration, pumps, servers and alarms on their own circuits.

Regulations

  • ITC-BT-17: main and individual control and protection devices in the board.
  • ITC-BT-22: protection against overcurrent, which sets how circuit breakers must be sized.

Auto-reclosers in the Aljarafe, the countryside and Seville’s businesses

We fit them mostly in villas and second homes in the Aljarafe, from Mairena to Tomares, Bormujos and the towns in the north and south of the area, in country houses around Carmona, where a stopped pump leaves the house without water, and in bars and shops in the city centre and Dos Hermanas with cold rooms. In many cases we add surge protection, because storms are the most common cause of passing trips, and energy monitoring that alerts you if something stops working.

How we work

  1. Check of the fuse board and the existing protection devices.
  2. Insulation measurements to rule out real leaks.
  3. Proposal: auto-recloser, reorganising circuits or both.
  4. Fixed quote.
  5. Installation and test of the reclosing and the selectivity.
  6. Setting up mobile alerts if the device includes them.

If your board has no room to reorganise, see fuse board replacement.

Frequently asked questions

What is an auto-reclosing device?

It is a small motor unit coupled to the RCD or the circuit breaker that switches it back on after it has tripped. Before reclosing it checks that the leak or fault has gone; if it persists, it does not reclose and stays off so as not to put the installation at risk. Many models send an alert to your mobile every time it trips.

I spend part of the year away from my home near Seville. Is an auto-recloser worth it?

It is one of the cases where it is most worthwhile: second homes and houses left empty for days, homes with a full fridge and freezer, businesses with cold rooms, equipment that must not stop such as pumps or servers, and areas where storms cause frequent tripping. A trip at night with nobody there can be very expensive.

How much does an auto-reclosing device cost?

As a guide, 150 to 400 euros fitted, plus 21 % VAT, depending on the model, the number of poles and whether it includes mobile alerts or a link to the home automation system. First we check that the RCD to be reclosed is compatible and that the installation has no leaks that would make it trip constantly.

Is it dangerous for the RCD to switch itself back on?

No, if the device is the right one and properly installed. The recloser checks insulation before reclosing and limits the number of attempts: if the leak persists, it leaves the protection off. What must never be done is use it to hide a real leak, which is why we measure the installation first.

What is selectivity in a fuse board?

It is the coordination of protection devices so that, when there is a fault, only the one nearest the problem trips and not the ones above it. With good selectivity (discrimination), a short circuit in a terrace socket cuts that circuit only, not the whole house or the whole shop.

Why does the main switch trip when only one circuit fails?

Because the protection devices are not coordinated: the main switch or the main RCD is as fast or as sensitive as the ones on each circuit, and trips first. It is corrected by reorganising the board, choosing breakers with staggered curves, ratings and times, and sharing the circuits between several RCDs.

High-immunity RCD

We fit a high-immunity RCD in Seville, Spain when yours trips for no reason with LED lights, the induction hob, inverter air conditioning or the EV charger. First we check there is no real earth leakage, then we choose the right RCD (high-immunity, type A, F or B) so it protects just as well and stops tripping.

Surge protection

Surge protection in your fuse board in Seville, Spain is the cheapest way to save the fridge, TV, router, boiler and induction hob from lightning, storms and voltage surges. We fit protectors against transient and permanent overvoltage, or combined units, in homes, business premises, EV chargers and solar installations.

RCD keeps tripping

If your RCD keeps tripping and will not stay up, there is a current leaking to earth somewhere in a circuit or an appliance. We locate it with an insulation tester, repair it and check that your RCD (GFCI) protects you as it should.

Fuse board replacement

A consumer unit replacement in Seville, Spain is the upgrade that adds the most safety without building work: main switch, several RCDs, one breaker per circuit and surge protection. We replace your old fuse box, or a board with a single RCD, with a new fuse board (breaker panel) sized for your power and your circuits.

Bars and restaurants

A restaurant electrician in Seville, Spain for bars, restaurants and commercial kitchens: dedicated power lines for griddles, ovens, fryers and cold rooms, a fuse board with selectivity so one fault does not black out the dining room, emergency lighting and the paperwork you need to open and pass the inspection.

Energy monitor

We install a home energy monitor in your consumer unit in Seville, Spain so you can see on your phone, in real time, how much the house and each circuit uses: the air conditioning, the kitchen, the water heater or the EV charger. You spot waste, check what your solar panels produce and find out what potencia contratada (contracted power) you really need.
