Video door entry system (videoportero, video intercom)
A door entry system with a camera on the street panel and a monitor in the home, so you can see and talk to whoever calls and open the door. Modern ones let you answer and open from your phone. In US English, a video intercom.
What a videoportero is
A videoportero is a door entry system with a picture (a video intercom in the US). The street panel has a camera and a call button; inside the home there is a monitor with a screen, microphone and door release button. When someone calls, you see who it is before opening.
Types
- Two-wire analogue: two cables carry audio, video, power and door release. The most common choice when upgrading, because it reuses the existing wiring.
- IP: runs over network cable, often powered by PoE. It handles many homes, several panels and calls to your phone.
- Wifi: the monitor joins your home network and forwards calls to an app. Handy for letting in a delivery while you are out.
- Kit for a house: one panel and one or two monitors, the usual choice for detached and terraced houses.

In an apartment block
The street panel and the building wiring are common elements, so changing the system for the whole block is decided at the owners’ meeting (junta de propietarios). Inside your flat you only change the monitor, which must be compatible with the building system. An old audio intercom can often become a video one using the same cables.
