Multicore cable (manguera eléctrica)

A cable that groups several insulated conductors inside a common outer sheath. It is named by number of cores and cross-section, such as 3x2.5 mm², and used for extension leads, machinery, surface wiring and runs on cable trays.

What a manguera is

A manguera eléctrica (literally a hose) is a multicore cable (multiconductor cable in the US): several conductors inside one outer sheath. Each core has its own coloured insulation, and the common sheath protects them all from knocks, rubbing, damp or sun. Buried home wiring uses single wires in conduit; the manguera is kept for places where the cable is more exposed.

How to read its name

  • 3x2.5: three 2.5 mm² cores, typically live, neutral and earth for a single-phase socket circuit.
  • 3x6 or 3x10: single-phase with more power, for example for an EV charger.
  • 5x6: three phases, neutral and earth for a three-phase circuit.
  • Codes such as RZ1-K or H07RN-F indicate the insulation type, flexibility and behaviour in a fire.

Where it is used

  • Extension leads for building sites or gardens.
  • Machinery, pumps and motors.
  • Runs on cable trays in garages and warehouses.
  • Buried runs in duct to a shed, a pool or a gate.
  • Temporary installations for fairs and events, with flexible rubber cable.

How to choose it

The size depends on the power and the length, to keep the voltage drop within limits. The sheath depends on the location: sun, water, burial or public premises, where halogen-free cable is required. An indoor cable on a terrace cracks within a few summers. See outdoor sockets or machinery connection in Seville, Spain.
