Maxímetro (maximum demand reading on your meter)

A meter function that records the highest power you have drawn in each billing period. It shows whether your contracted power is too high or too low and, on supplies above 15 kW, is used to bill excess power.

What the maxímetro is

The maxímetro is a maximum demand record kept by your meter: the highest power, in kW, you have drawn in each period. Old maximeters were separate devices with a needle; today it is just another function of the smart meter.

How it is measured

The meter does not log instant spikes, such as a motor starting, but the average power over short intervals, usually a quarter of an hour. The highest value of the month in each power period is what appears as the maxímetro reading.

What it tells you at home

On a home 2.0TD tariff you pay for your contracted power (potencia contratada) whatever you use, and if you exceed it the ICP built into the meter trips. The maxímetro shows what you really use:

  • If it never goes above 3 kW and you have 5.75 kW contracted, you are probably paying for power you do not need.
  • If it always sits near the limit, any new appliance may trip the ICP.

You can check it in your distributor’s online customer area, on some bills or with an energy monitor in the consumer unit.

In businesses and large premises

On supplies above 15 kW the maxímetro has a direct effect on the bill: if demand exceeds the contracted power in any period, excess power charges apply. Adjusting each period’s power to the maxímetro is one of the quickest ways for a business to save.

How we help

We review your maximum demand history, fit an energy monitor if needed and suggest the power for each period. See contracted power and tariff review in Seville, Spain.
