CHAdeMO (Japanese rapid charging connector)

The Japanese connector for rapid DC charging used by the Nissan Leaf, some Mitsubishi and some Lexus models. It charges at 50 to 100 kW and is disappearing in Europe in favour of CCS Combo 2.

What CHAdeMO is

CHAdeMO is a DC rapid charging connector developed in Japan. It was one of the first to reach Europe and is fitted to the Nissan Leaf, several Mitsubishi models and some Lexus models. It charges in mode 4, at 50 to 100 kW, and it is a separate connector: the car also has another inlet for AC charging.

Why it is disappearing in Europe

European manufacturers and public charging networks have standardised on CCS Combo 2, which combines AC charging and DC rapid charging in one inlet. New cars no longer come with CHAdeMO and fewer charging stations keep a CHAdeMO cable, although many vehicles that use it are still on the road.

What to do if your car uses it

  • At home nothing changes. CHAdeMO is only for rapid charging. In your garage you charge on AC with a normal wallbox: Type 2, or Type 1 with an adaptor cable on older models.
  • On the road, plan ahead. Before setting off, check in the charging apps which stations on your route still have a CHAdeMO cable.
  • A little-known advantage: the Nissan Leaf with CHAdeMO is one of the cars compatible with bidirectional charging, the basis of V2H, which powers the house from the car battery.

Choosing a home charger

If you have a CHAdeMO car and are unsure which charger to fit at home, we recommend the right unit and cable. See EV charger brands and home EV charger for a house in Seville, Spain.
